Hello, first off a bit about myself. I am a university student my true passions lie in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, wildlife photography, basically you name it, if it'll get me outdoors I'm interested. I've owned street bikes, rode for several years but accidents and being smart enough to understand that sitting on a crotch rocket at 21 was a bad idea. Been several years since I last owned a bike, but for some personal reason I have decided to get back into. I'm still not interested in a street bike, more interested in a dual sport.

Anyways for the first time question, how many Kms or miles can I expect to get out of a 650 sized 4 stroke bike. My friend has a well maintained DR 650 that he is offering me. Just curious if I'll need to worry about rebuilding heads etc very fast, its currently got around 35,000 km I believe.

Thanks

welcome to the site! not sure on how far a 650 will get you before breaking down but my buddy has a 93 KLX650 thats never had a rebuild and has been ridden in alot of races (flat track, hare scrambles, etc.) as well as ridden to work. but thats an old bike and the old ones last longer.

for anyone that has a good answer the 35,000km is just under 21,750 miles.

if it's a simple air cooled 2 valve 650 you can go a long way, and maintenance is cheap, however, most components outside of the engine like swingarm, linkage, shock bearings, shock seals, cables, clutch etc. would all require the same amount of maintenance, replacement as any other bike -0 the more you put it in the dirt and water - the more often you've got to maintain or replace.

There is no good answer to your question, because every bike has a different history. If your friend took care of it, you should have lots of trouble-free miles ahead . . . or it may stop running 10 minutes after you buy it. Generally, though these are reliable bikes that run for years with little attention.
