650R or XR400

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the props guys it is a shame you have to take matters in your own hands to create what Honda should have, to get what you want. Too bad they wont entertain the thought of listening to all of the people that buy their products. There is no reason, (with the exception of not selling parts and service) they could not build something like I did and sell it to us. They build and sell a bike similar to mine for overseas markets only.

Thumper Racing 440 kit with the Wiseco 10.5 to 1 piston, Hotcam stage 2, Kibble White valves. mild head porting, Magura hydraulic clutch, Hinson 8 disc clutch set-up with billet basket, inner hub, and pressure plate, Edelbrock Quicksilver pumper carburetor. I spent a few bucks on it. See pictures here:

I bought both in 2000 and ended up selling the 650R to pump up the 400 to a 440, as well as as modify it to fit my intended use and riding style better. I loved the power of the 650 but here is no desert here so the 650 had to go it was too hard to make it change directions in the tight twisties of enduro's here. The finished product Has no radiators to break, is easy to maintain and is a joy to ride:

Yeah, keep the 650. I have one and rode my buddy's 400 and it doesn't seem any easier to ride on tight trails, and doesn't have near the power. It is a very good bike though, just not as good.
I'm keeping the 650. Me and a buddy went for a ride Sunday in the usual riding areas and, quite frankly, I have no idea why I even thought about getting something else! (Probably just mental, getting older and not riding as much off road as I used to.) The bike does awesome in the aformentioned situations. Right now the terrain is about as bad as it gets here. It's muddy, rutty, sloppy, slick and very wet. Me and the big 650R handled it all in stride, which is more than I can say for my buddy, he went down twice. LOL I had to ride his DRZ400 back up a real nasty steep hill for him because he kept getting out of shape and ending up off in the brush. LOL We had a great time. Bruce

Maybe it would help to gear down your 650? It won't make your bike any lighter or turn any better, but it will help in the tight rutty stuff you're talking about. Just a thought...

I ordered a one tooth smaller countershaft sprocket. We'll see how that works out.:banghead: Bruce

Man seeing this stuff kinda angers me! Why is there so much that we cant get in the US?!?!?!

Maybe it was that whole A-bomb thing....maybe they're still pissed at us, and deny the US of the thumpers/ dual sports we crave. Mean basters....

(cringes and waits for blow back from un-PC comment :banghead: )

I was in a similar situation, with riding conditions so i know what you mean. i wouldnt make the swap to the 400, youll be dissapointed, only about 20-25 lbs. less. try a 250x or a 450x if you want to stay with a honda.

i ended up buying a husqvarna te 450, much lighter, e-start and street leagal, not to mention runs like a raped ape and handles the trails like a 250. good luck. mike

so your running 13-48?

I go from 15-40 gearing with the SM wheels to stock 14-48 huge diffornce...but sense i only use the dirt wheels when im in off-road technicals i was thinking of going with a 50-52 tooth rear, it would give it so much pull in 2-4th gear, and still cruise around at 50-60 no problem.

In response to the main question, XR400 or XR650R. I have had both and currently have a XR250. The 400 seems way smaller and lighter than the 650, which obviously it is. The 400 is nicer for a trails bike as in the real slow stuff, as the 650 will overheat fairly easily. However, nothing beats the thrill of the torque and speed the 650 puts out.... It'll put a lump the size of a 125 piston in most people throats!
