How can the 650L lose weight?

Recommended Posts

I've read so much but can't find a thread about losing weight on the L model bike. Yeah, yeah "get an XR600R" and call it good but I really want the e-start and am curious besides the battery and starter, passenger pegs, steal tank...what parts seperate it from being as "light" as the XR 600?

What's the lightest someone has gotten theirs?

I noticed you got rid of that bulky taillight too. :banghead:

I am guessing, but I think you can lose 15 - 20 lbs easily and up to about 30 without too much trouble. The list of easy mods are:

Remove:

- side reflectors

- plastic plate on brake side over front hub

- smog equipment

- Seat grab strap

- Right side mirror

- Passenger pegs

I think this is about 7-8 lbs.

Then, you can also easily change:

- Handlebars to light alloy bars

- Taillight

- Fuel tank / metal cap for clark or IMS

- Silencer

- left side mirror for DS unit

- Rear sprocket for alloy or alloy/steel unit

This is probably about 12 - 14 lbs.

Then, if you are ambitious:

- Swap headlight for Baja designs unit, and remove HL bracket. Not best for night use.

- Remove horn and horn bracket

- Remove rear subframe, switch to plastic rear fender (caution, this makes it easy to bend rear frame rails in a crash)

- Switch to pod filter, relocate battery to airbox (not good for off-road use)

- Swap ignition switch for DS-type unit

- Grind off tool bag lock

- Swap speedo unit for electronic type (like Trail Tech)

This will probably pull off another 10 - 15 lbs.

What I am learning is that a big part of the weight difference are engine internals. Crank is heavier, flywheel is heavier, and I have heard that the starter clutch alone is 20 lbs.

I may have left some things out, and I am sure there are other small mods that may help, but at the end of the day it is a heavy bike. If you are coming at the purchase from a true off-road bike, the weight is a major turnoff. However, they are still really capable off road, just not when the pace gets up.

Hope that helps.
