i'm looking at a set of applied triple clamps and it doesn't have the steering stem.

1) should i aim for a set with the stem?
2) if i buy without the stem do i need a press to get the stem in?

If the set doesn't come with a stem, then you'll need to press the one you have out of your old clamps and in to the new ones.

Hey nap, you can't buy just the stem from Yamaha. it comes with the whole lower clamp so you will have to press your old one out.

You can press your stock stem and bearing off and press them onto your new clamps.

Applied Racing makes their own stems and sources their own high quality bearings. You can order them through Thumper Talk!:banghead:
