There are two different 450's. The first generation is the '03-'05 YZ450 and the '03-'06 WR450. The second generation is the '06-'08 YZ450, and the '07-'08 WR450. If you have the first generation ('03-'06) WR, you can only exchange your trans for the 4 speed from the G1 YZ450. G2 WR's could use the trans from the G2 YZ450. The difference between the 2 is that the complete trans is about 12 mm wider in the newer ones.

It is possible to use the 5 speed from a 426 or 400 in the Gen 1 WR450, but there is a lot of custom machining required to make that work.

I'm wanting to do just the opposite - install an 07 or 08 WR450 trans into my 06 YZ450... I did a WR400 trans into my YZ400 years ago, maybe we should talk.

Welll Ummm you can order the gears and all for the YZ from the WR and they will fit.. as for the starter not sure are the starter bolt bosses are on the block for it? If not then your done. Or buy an 08 WR and install the engine into the YZ.. If you have the money for a modified YZ then you could probably get a new bike.. heck just put your engine from th YZ and sell the 08.. Heck just keep em both.. Why do you want to make a YZ into a WR anyway? Just buy a WR.. Easy nough..:banghead: You can buy a WR take all the stuff off of it sell the extra parts make enough money to get the YZ stuff and WA LA!! YZ E START!!! Done.. If your gonna spend around 1500.00 to 2000.00 on the YZ with the internal starter parts and all you can get an 06 for about 3000.00 and now you got 2 bikes to make 1..

The starter conversion is possible only with the Gen 2 450's, and then, I wouldn't call it practical.

The Gen 1 YZ 450 will not accept the generator/ignition/starter drive/starter motor from any WR without changing the crankcases among other things.

The Gen 2 YZ450 would seem to be more capable of it, but you'd need $7-800 or so of WR parts BEFORE you started adding the motor and electricals (the flywheel, stator, starter drive clutch, idler gear and shaft, ignition cover and CRANKSHAFT from a WR are needed).

Overall, If you want to go that far, you're better off buying the WR, perking up the engine, and putting a set of YZ forks on it.

Sell the YZ and look for a used WR that's way easier than trying to make your YZ electric start and cheaper too
