Xl600R/XR650L Hybrid

Recommended Posts

Got the wheels mounted up. Had to cut the inner bracket for the chain gaurd off to clear the rear wheel.

On the front wheel, inside diameter of the bearings were too big so my machinest fabbed up some spacers that fit inside the bearings. Fits like a glove now.

Yeah, getting the wheels installed makes the bike look a lot more finished--and it is, really. Once the engine is done and installed, it'll be clean sailing.

I still need to get a reservoir hose for the shock built and the shock itself rebuilt. There's a local guy here who says anything Race Tech can do, he can do. He uses Race Tech products for his builds too, evidently. I'm gonna give him a shot.

I bought both of these side covers off of ebay at different times. The top one I got just as you see it, the bottom one had no background and the "600R" was tore up. I brought them to a local place called Sharp Auto Graphics and asked if he could make it look like the other one--I'd say he did a great job. :applause:

Also scored a new Baja Designs street legal kit from a friend. He gave me a screaming deal on it so I believe another clap.gif is in order.

I will be using the stock XL600 tail light but everything else from the kit will be used.

This purchase wasn't absolutely mandatory because the originals worked okay but they looked bad. The rest of the bike is looking like or near new and the originals would have stuck out like a turd in a punch bowl. ?

Got the Baja Designs lighting kit pretty much all installed. The shock and air box are all in for good. Started bolting up the rear brake stuff. And, the bike is finally standing on its own off of the block and on the kick stand.

The XRs only ported big fin head is at XRiders place in the Bay Area getting a refresh.

I've decided to build the stock engine from this bike--for now. Of course it won't be stock. ? I'm keeping the XRL engine and may still do smething with it for this bike, but for now, it's getting the original engine.

On the bench ready for tear down.

Got the bottom end disassembled.
Now I'm wondering if I should just rebuild the stock XL crank. Since this bike will only be run on the street, I'll be taking advantage of RPM with the cam I'll be running and the XL crank has a fairly short stroke at 75mm compared to the XRs 80mm and, because of that, will have a lower piston speed which will be conducive to longer engine life.
I don't know. I'm probably just overthinking the whole thing. lol.

cool......I was hopin you`d get back to this thread before I retire.....

lookin sweet,,i`d just rebuild the engine to stock so you can actually ride the bugger,,gives you lots of time to do whatever you like to the other engine....

I`ve got a 103mm ceramic top coming from Steve..XR`S ONLY sent me the wrong piston a few weeks back (*imagine that)  but Steve should have the

proper piston in hand this week or next..still not sure what cam I`ll use this time,,,?

I have a Megacycle cam.....but I think I want to try something different..i have an extremely low miles set of rockers and OE cam I might install first then send the Megacycle cam out for re-profiling to something different..this time around I haven`t put much thought into it..except piston choice?

Hey Bruce.....are you going to use that CW cam I sold you awhile back???????????

Hiya Brian! No, saving that one for something else. Gonna be using the Megacycle cam that was in the 675cc engine that was in this bike way back when. I don't even remember which grind it is now. :D  I'll have to dig it back out and have a look.
