This link works for me - thanks!

It is very interesting the turn signals are not required in MD (and I check the statute too) but you can't get it inspected if you don't have turn signals!

NJ,

According to the chart, New Jersey does NOT require a speedometer, turn signals or a daylight running headlight. You need a mirror, brake light, DOT tires. However, check with your local department of motor vehicles website for more details information. They all have the info available to the public.

I'm trying to get plates for my XR4 in Virginia and the DMV has been very nebulous about what they are going to be looking for.  The bike has a Procycle DS kit with two mirrors, two brake light switches and DOT legal tires installed. Also a speedometer/odometer for mileage (supposedly required in VA).  I'm supposed to write a letter saying exactly what I did to it, get it notarized, take pics of the bike, send it all in with the title and a big check, and theoretically get plates and a new title a few weeks later.

Anyone in VA go through this process?

I just got my XR4 titled and plated in VA. I walked into DMV with the MSO to find out what i needed to do to get a title. I tell the guy at the front desk "i want to title this bike" and hand him the MSO. He hands me a form to fill out and the short story is i walked out with a title and a plate. The MSO said "not for highway use" on it too. It was Saturday about 5 min before closing time at the main Richmond DMV. I had a grin from ear to ear the rest of the day!

I took my MSO to the Tappahannock DMV and got a title, but they would not issue plates.  Took the title to two other DMV's, including Richmond, and still no go.  I'm going to have to go through the process of having the vehicle reclassified,  which involves a notarized letter stating all of the modifications I did to make it street legal, taking a bunch of photos, mailing it all to DMV with a rather large check, waiting three weeks, and praying.

I read that someone else on here has done it the hard way.  i PM'ed him, but got no response.

Just bought a '00 KTM 520EXC and it looks a lot easier than I thought to get it street legal in Alabama.  Good post.

I have had the AMA site that says Maryland doesn't require turn signals pointed out to me everytime I have posted MD title inspection requirements. So, having just gotten my second DS bike in three years through title inspection, here is what the checklist has for equipment:

Headlights(s)
Turn Signals (1973)
High Beam Indicator
Tail Lamps
Stop Lamps
Tag Lamp
Reflectors
Horn
Mirrors L/R
Passenger Hand Hold
Passenger Foot Rest
Side/Center Stand
Chain Guard
Fenders
Speedometer/Odometer

They do check for hi/lo beam, that the brake light works for both front and rear brakes, DOT tires, general condition and they road test the bike. Pretty funny watching a scooter shop guy that couldn't touch the ground on it road test my LC4-640. I suggested that he not get too crazy with the right grip.

After not having found a procedure for making my XR4 street legal in VA, I was forced to do it myself.  I've condensed everything into this post.

Excuse the cross posting, please.

That AMA site is a joke. Of course, its the AMA so thats no surprise. I'm in PA and that site isn't anywhere even close to be correct. No turn signals required? Where in the heck did they get that from? Not only do we need turn signals but they have to be DOT certified.

The way I understand it one states rules must follow anothers when it comes to traffic. So if you have a house in AZ and get it all setup there you can ride it ( would imagine ) in CA perfectly legal.  And I wouldn't worry about anything. I think you pretty much just hit the lotto on that. I bet alot of people wish they had your situation so they didn't have to adhere to CA's laws.

Unfortunately, that's not the case. I just went through that, registering a TTR250 in AZ for my wife using an AZ address. Our friendly ranger pointed out all the things that don't work. For one, any motorcycle in CA has to have all the CA equipment on it to be road legal. Since all I needed to get a plate in AZ was headlight and taillight, the lack of all the other stuff would make you an easy target for the CA cops.

CA has all sorts of laws regarding out of state vehicles...if your primary residence is in CA, you have 10 days to register it. Operating an out of state vehicle with CA drivers license can bring a fine of around $500. Owning property in another state is not enough....they go by the primary residence, or if you are gainfully employed here you have to register here. So if you have an out of state drivers license, you can get away with it for a while, but you still need the equipment on the bike for highway use.

The other possibility is "borrowing a bike temporarily" from someone living elsewhere, although they even have laws covering borrowing for an extended time. And you can forget about trying to register out of state an bringing it into CA later, you won't be able to register here without an EPA sticker.

I think I'll just move to Arizona.....
