Forestry Department temporarily closes Clatsop State Forest campgrounds and trails to survey storm damage

The Oregon Department of Forestry's Astoria District today announced the temporary closure of all campgrounds and trails in the Clatsop State Forests as a precautionary measure and to help ensure public safety while district staff survey recent storm damage.

This closure will provide time for recreation staff to evaluate potentially dangerous conditions, such as hazardous trees, and to survey trail bridges and other infrastructure for structural integrity after the recent major windstorm and flooding.

This closure includes the following campgrounds and facilities: Gnat Creek, Northrup Creek, Henry Rierson Spruce Run, and Lost Lake.

Trails closed: Gnat Creek, Bloom Lake, Soapstone Lake, Astoria District Demonstration Forest Trail, and Northrup Creek Loop Trail.

The closures will be removed at the earliest possible opportunity.

Are these ORV trails?

Heard last year that they were working on establishing this as an "official" OHV area. Any word on that?
Thanks for the update, Toast.

Gnat creek is a hiking trail, northrup creek is a horse trail. The other ones are not in the Nicolai riding area.
The forestry dept. are still talking about trying to make it like a brownscamp with a campground and staging area.

Good point Mrudy! I don't know that area & assumed there was. Here's from the ODF website: "The recreation program on the Clatsop State Forest is relatively new and ODF staff members are striving to expand and improve opportunities. Traditionally, recreation has been limited to camping, hunting, fishing, and off-highway use." So, I though there was.

You made me look further down the pages & I they say this : "Currently, there are no designated OHV trails on the Clatsop State Forest."

So, sorry for the useless news. I though it might save somebody some headache.

I did get notice today that Jones Creek area in TSF has some closures from the storm but I didn't forward it home.
