Will the muffler from an 04 WR 450 fit a 99 WR 400?

Recommended Posts

I just bought one on Ebay and am prepared to make it fit, but wondering if anyone knows how close it'll be?

We only have 3 hours of daylight now so on the weekends I have to head out at 9AM to catch some daylight. I'm running a White Bros E pipe now and the neighbors are getting a little annoyed.

I figured the stock 450 pipe would be fairly quiet as well as light, and flow better than the stock 400 pipe, and it was cheap.

TIA

Yes it will......:banghead: I did exactly this when I bought my 04'. I had this obnoxiously loud e-series on my 99' and I had bought a Q for my 04' so I decided it would be worth a try.

It's almost an exact fit but you will have to slightly elongate the rear mounting hole on the pipe to line up with the 99's rear point but there is plenty of material there on the pipe's mount bracket so a dremel or oversized drill bit will do the job.

Tip, mount it up to the header and get the mid way bolt in before marking out the rear mount.

One bit of bad news.... the stock 04' pipe is NOT light but it's real shiny....

Good Luck!

That is great news, thanks SJMC! (about it fitting I mean, not about it not being light.):D

Max, I will follow up and post pics. :busted:

However, the mufflers were unchanged except the finish between '98 and '04.

This may be true and hopefully Frostbite will be able to mount it with no mods at all. I only speak from my personal experience mounting the 04' OEM unit up to the 99'... I had to hog out the rear mount a 1/4" or so:excuseme:

Frost, let us know how it turns out. If a stocker fits, then I would imagine that something from the aftermarket should fit also. I would love to upgrade to something that is a bit shorter.

Will do, it may be a while though. I'm heading south on Saturday, a month off for Christmas. If the muffler doesn't arrive before I leave then I won't be seeing it until I get back, around January 20th. So don't think I'm not following up, I'm just defrosting and will post when I get back. :banghead:

  • 1 month later...

The 2004 450 pipe bolted right up to my 99, no problem or modifications required. The holes at the muffler can and under the shock reservoir just barely lined up, but I didn't have to file or drill. The muffler pipe slipped perfectly onto the stock header pipe.

It is a bit heavier than the White Bros pipe, but I like the look of it better and it is a LOT quiter.

Just after I installed it, I fell, and the number plate cracked in the cold, so I trimmed it down until new plastes arrive. I didn't want you to think that I chopped plastic to show off the new pipe.

That is one crazy looking ride. I'm selling my snowmobile!
I did.

I have a new question. Looks like I'm buying a 2007 WR 450 next week. It's in Phoenix and I'm going to fly down and crate it up for the flight north.

I have an IMS 4 gallon fuel tank on my 99. Does anybody know if it'll fit the 07?

Because I'm in a remote community, I have a large stock of spare parts, the nearest bike shop is a thousand miles away and it takes a month or more for parts to arrive. I'm hoping most of my spares will work for the 07 - rads, seat, fenders, brake pads, wheels and wheel bearings, clutch plates, water pump seals...I'm confident the levers will fit - wait now, the 07 has a hydraulic clutch - well at least my cable won't be freezing on me anymore.

I'll be in Phoenix for a day or 2, anybody want to go out for a beer? (Beer and any other form of alcohol is 100% illegal here, so I could really use a beer) - I'll bring the ice, I usually have a bunch in my pockets after a ride. :applause:

Cheers

p.s. The new 450's come stock with a block heater, right?

Wheels, bearings, front fender, maybe brake pads... yes. Everything else? NO.:applause:

You will want a larger tank, trust me. IMS 3.1 is good but requires YZ shrouds, do a search on aftermarket tanks for the 07' there are more options than the IMS.

The clutch on an 07' is NOT hydraulic...

Block heater:lol:

Crap, I thought they had a hydraulic clutch. I'll look at Magura.

Thanks Don
