Just got back from the Tahuya focus group meeting in Belfair tonight. It is official, all the trails are closed until further notice. Trail conditions are very hazardous right now. Most bridges are washed out, Tahuya River Horse Camp lost about 5 campsites next to the river just to give you an idea. There will be volunteer forces going out this Saturday to asess all the damage. Keep checking the DNR's website for further updates. There is going to be a lot of work that will need to get done to get these trails back into shape. If you would like to volunteer some time and effort, please contact the DNR directly for volunteer info. I don't have there # right now or I would post it, but you can easily find it on the internet or in the phone book. Please respect the "Closed signs" it is for your own protection.

Sad! It is a long haul up to Tahuya from Vancouver but I love it up there:) I don't think there is any significant damage at JC. I got news today that Capitol Forest was hit hard as well. If the membership of JCTRA will approve it a group of us may be able to head north with the club 6x6's, chain saws, etc and help out? What club or clubs do most of the trail work up at Tahuya?

If you want to help. The person to contact is Ray at 360-801-1080. He is the DNR rep responsible for coordinating the repairs.

From their trail map: To report hazards, or for questions call the DNR South Puget Sound Region office at 360-825-1631. That's their general info number.

During the clean up come on up to Green Mountain for a few hours of riding. Just a couple miles north. I will check it out this weekend and let you know.

Might be blow down up there but I doubt too much water related damage (mostly headwaters to Tahuya drainages).

Are the volunteer efforts primarily on the weekends or can you help on the weekdays as well?

Buddies went riding a Belfair Wednesday 12/5 , said besides a few of the bridges being washed out and a few windfalls, it wasn't that bad and the riding was great. The main parking area is closed, yes.

Green Mountain: closed to assess damage. They don't know how extensive damage is at this time. Could be blow down, water damage, or both. Once they get a crew out there to assess damage, work will commence and trails open when complete. They said user groups are dialed in but couldn't advise how to hook up with them???

Personally, I think it's blow down rather than water related as Tahuya received. Check with WDNR on status before you head out there expecting to ride.

If you'd like to team up with some of the clubs that regularly do trail work at Tahuya try some of these:

Bremerton Trail Cruisers: sdecoy@hotmail.com or thomson@silverlink.net

Cascade Family M/C: clubinfo@cascadefamilymc.org

WA ATV Association: lminkler50@aol.com or brosam@comcast.net

Thank you, that is just what I was looking for. From what I've seen the clubs do most of the trail work and know far better what is going on.

The official word for DNR's 12/7 press release:

Tahuya, Green Mountain, and Hood Canal State Forests
The Tahuya, Green Mountain, and Hood Canal State Forests are temporarily closed to public access. Flooding has caused severe trail system and campground damage, resulting in hazardous trail and campground conditions. A number of trail bridges were washed out, and there is severe rutting of trail and forest road surfaces. From initial assessments it appears that extensive repairs will be needed to reopen the entire trail network, but segments of the trail systems may be re-opened as sections are repaired and deemed safe for public use. To report damage to the recreation trails and facilities throughout these forests, or assist with trail damage assessments, send an e-mail to: sam.jarrett@dnr.wa.gov.

So, in addition to the private volunteer groups you can contact the state too.
