Best YZ450F chain

Recommended Posts

Who has had the best luck with Chains. I used to run a 520 ert2 and it only lasted a couple of months. So I went with DID X ring and is was great but I didn't like the press on Master link. I worked well but tough to take chain off to clean. Any suggestions would be helpful. I do run a bike hard! Thanks

Since I used on on my old CR500, I use nothing but Regina ORN-6 O-ring chains. The one on the CR was over a year5 and a half old when I sold the bike, and the bike had chewed through two rear sprockets in that time. The chain, by actual measurement was only about 1% longer than new.

The one on my '03 has more than two year's time on it and is stretched 0.7%, and the 1.5 year-old ORN-6 on my older '06 is 0.8% stretched, but that's the one my son rides. I have fewer than 7 total chain adjustments on all of my 3 current bikes together, including the 3 installations.

This chain uses a clip type master that requires some pressing to fit it together, but that is to improve its strength. It's not a problem though, because there is frankly no reason to ever remove it.

How often do you need to take the chain off? I have had the same chain on my 05 YZ for two years (100 hrs) and had no stretching etc so I am happy but if Gray says regina, well that is your chain sir.. ?

The best chain I've personally used was a DID ERV2. Pricy but lasted extremely well. The Regina GPZ is also supposed to be extremely good, but priced similar to the ERV2. I know the GPZ is recommended for up to 1000cc by Regina and I believe the ERV2 is similar (can anyone verify this?). The rivet master links are more reliable than the clip type, but you need a chain rivet tool to install them and they are use-once items. Street price is probably a little over $100 for either chain.

You should only have to take it off when replacing it!

just comparing theT-Ring VT to the 520VM....the specs seems close.

http://shop.thumpertalk.com/catalogs/Tucker_Rocky_Offroad_2007/default.asp?p=469&s=2

The VM is a good chain, but it's the low end of the DID x-ring chains. The ERV series and ZVM series DID x-rings are better. All 3 are gold. Here's a link to the manufacturer info:

here is a question? I have used a VT and loved it because of it being narrow. Is the ERV3 the same as far as the width?(narrow so I won't have a problem with the chain guide?)

Thanks...I did not realize there were so many x-ring chains from DID

Look at the specs http://www.didchain.com/specs.htm

compare the 520VT to 520ERV3...the dimensions look very close if I'm reading the chart right..

With respect to Grayracer's statement that there is no reason to remove the masterlink, how do you, when installing the rear wheel, put the chain over the rear sprocket while keeping the chain adjuster bolts in the same position they were in when you removed the rear wheel?

Just wondering...has anybody tried the DID T-Ring VT? The specs seems as good if not better then the X ring.

For some reason I would equate narrow to less drag ...

The "narrow" ring chains are for the CRF's. They need the narrow chain in order to clear the case behind the countershaft sprocket. You can use them on anything though. Just don't use a regular width one on a CRF.....unless you want to buy a set of cases.

Pull the axel out, slide the wheel forward and slip the chain off the sprocket. Pull the brake caliper and carrier out of the way and remove the wheel.

Remove the axle, slide the wheel forward, roll the chain off, and slide the wheel out. The adjusters bear on the axle. Once it's out of the way, there's nothing to prevent this.
