Has anyone overpowered the XR600/650L engine design?

Let me clarify: Has anyone made enough power to find a critical shortcoming in the engine's strength that cannot be practically addressed?

I have these ideas about turbocharging my 600R, but I'm concerned about how far I could get before gain is unable to exceed cost. The main items I'm worried about are the crank and rod, cases, and transmission(most of the engine, right?). I know some roadracers and flattrackers have made lots of power on these old aircooled lumps, but has anyone reached the limit?

That place is overrun with spam. In fact, that's all I saw.

I saw that thread, but that was a 650R, wasn't it?

ya, it was a 650r.. But point being always start with a good rod. Just a rule of thumb for building crazy fun stuff. (if you like living)

Team Honda did with the baja1000 XR600Rs, at one point. BRB63 (I think) had some good details on that- was it the 680RN, something like that?

They were beefing up the power to battle the KX500s, had the power but not the longevity.

I remember the same thing. It was more of an experiment that Honda did. They never used it in the race. The article stated that they were breaking cases.

I've not been able to find that article again.

That said, I know that Thumper Racing sells a 660cc big bore kit for the XR600 and they claim that it is reliable.

The 680RN article was actually what got me wondering about this. That and once in a while I hear about some roadracer claiming to be making 60 or 70+hp on a 600-based engine and doing it reliably.

With those two details and not much else, I can only speculate that either the roadracers aren't making that much power.....or the 680RN was making much more.
