Does anyone know the the recommended gearing on a YZ450 to go a little faster? I had a 48t sprocket when I bought it, put on a 51t sprocket and seems to be going a little slower.?

To go faster, put a bigger sprocket on the front and/or smaller on the rear.

you might be going slower but i bet your bike pulls wheelies a little easier.

I found that a 47tooth rear is the ticket for the 03. Being a 4speed this sprocket allows you all the top you can handle and gear spacing/shifting is much better:thumbsup:

just another question. I have a 45 tooth on my 03 right now, but its not great for mx. I was thinking a 48 tooth, maybe a 51? Which would be best, i want as much low end as possible.

What kind of track do ya ride one

Lots of tight turns and hills or more open and faster speed type?

i run a 48 on my 04 YZ450 and it seems good

45 is too small for mx....I like the 47 for longer higher speed tracks and would go up no more than a 49 ever.....over 49 way way too much shifting

i ride alot of tight tracks where i seem to have trouble making enough speed to clear some jumps, so i was thinking maybe the bigger sprocket, like the 51 tooth would be better.

Stock on mine was 14/51 and I changed it to a 14/48 and gained about 12 mph in top gear if that's what you want? Of coarse your gonna go faster in 1st gear too?

Remember that yours is an '05, and has higher primary gearing. An '05 with the stock 14/51, and an '03/'04 with the stock 14/48 are within 1% of being geared exactly the same.

I have a 51 on my '03 right now, but you top out to quick. (But you do pull wheelies like crazy.)

Then a 48 rear will return you to stock gearing.
