96 XR600 Jetting

Recommended Posts

Has anyone solved the cough and die syndrom?? It starts good cold but after riding awhile(30minutes,tight woods) it will die when chopping the throttle to make a corner and then it's kick, kick, kick, etc for Five minutes for it to crank again(thats hard on a old man). It's stock except for the XR Only pipe. I keep it idled up which helps, but it still does it when it's hot. I'm sure someone has solved it, fill me in!!!

Thanks, Mitch

Jetting with the XRs Only pipe should be 155 main, 68 pilot. I have had to run as high as a 160 main in some 600s.

I'll second that. Also check the little o ring that seals the idle mixture screw. Just put in a new one. With a pipe you should be running about two turns out (or more) at anything from sea level to a couple thousand feet.

Then make sure the idle circuit tubes inside the throat aren't clogged. The smallest bit of debris can cause problems.

I have the same problem with my 600. I'm jetted for about 3,000 and travel up to about 6,000. After bouncing downhill the engine floods out and refuses to restart. I'm betting the float is off.

Every time it dies after bouncing downhill I have to do the restart trick (gas off, tilt right to drain the carb, kick twice with the gas off and full throttle, gas on, kick). It'll restart on the first kick but what a pain in the ass.

I need a pumper carb.

I put an Edelbrock on a '96 XR600 after becoming exasperated with the stock carb, good move. Easier starting, no flooding even when the bike is dropped ( I tested this many times), no cough and die, great throttle response, better fuel mileage. Downside, not cheap.

ouch...$433.00 I guess that will be the last resort!
