Shim sizes, universal?

Hey,

So I just went to my stealership to get a couple of shims and they have to order them, which is kind of annoying (especially after the guy told me I had an old bike, 99 yz400). I was wondering, will the shims for a newer 450 fit my 400? cause they might have that in stock.

I was wondering cause hotcams makes kits for the 400, 426, and 450, maybe they size the diameter just smaller to fit all?

Yes, all year YZ,WR 400,426, and 450's use the same shims. The Yamaha part numbers are the same, so if you ask for 450 shims they're going to be the same thing.

The Hot Cams kit is a good deal (In my case, since I work on all types of machines) but I have had a few of their shims that were out of tolerance on the diameter and wouldn't fit in the valve spring retainer.

That is excatly what I was thinking about and the reason why I cancelled my order tonight. I thought about asking him if the service department had some, but this meat wasn't hearing anything. This is at Wildside Yamaha in St. Charles, IL.

Just imagine sending your bike in for a tune-up (which they quoted me a while back at 300 bucks before parts..) and god knows how long! Ridiculous

That's absolutely right!!!!!

If a customer walked into my shop and the parts guy told him he would need to order shims I'd give the guy the shims for free and tell the parts counterman to eat sh*t!

I don't know where you can get 300.00 for a "Race prep" with a valve adjustment? You are at the wrong place. 160.00 is more the correct price. It should be 2 hours for the valve adjustment including a race prep. That would be oil/oilfilter/air cleaner/air pressure in tires/ tighten spokes/adjust and lube chain/tighten nuts and bolts/ check running condition etc. It should only be 1.2 hours for the race prep and to check the valve clearance. Only 2 hours if the valves actually need to be adjusted. As far as that goes, Yamaha's rarely need to be messed with. If you have a CRF on the other hand.......... If the valves need to be adjusted, its already to late....They are already "dished" and then you need a valve job/ new valves. If thats the case......3 hours of labor will get your WHOLE top end replaced, piston included. 300.00 for a Valve adjustment is ROBBERY and complete BullS#@#$^T!!!!!

$160.00 for a valve adjustment and the race prep? Heck, my bikes have never seen the inside of the shop, but for a price like that I might just save my time and knuckles. Where is this place?

the only difference in vavle shims that I am aware of the between 250's and 450's I got a vavle him set for my 250 for like 79 bucks and its pretty huge the shim size between the motors is only different in diameter I believe

The problem with those shim kits is that you end up with a bunch of sizes you will never use.

I made sure to cancel my order with the others and asked them if they have to order shims for customers... the guy didn't give me a straight answer, just turned around the pot.

A reputable shop will just swap out your old shims for the sizes you need. Glad you got it all sorted out!

You need to check valve clearance after installing new cams, I had to change 4 out of 5 shims after installing stage 2 hot cams in my 2006. Clearance was dead nuts with the original cams before swapping.

A: Someone who shouldn't be attempting a cam change in the first place....

Sorry my man.... Even the manner in which you posed the question of "does anybody know what shim to use with a hot cam?"....means you don't understand anything about how this works....

You have to measure the clearance you have... Then pick the correct size thicker or thinner shim out of the dozens available (in your Hot Cams shim kit)...swap the shim(s) in...assemble and re measure the clearance....

The whole procedure is outlined in the OEM YAMAHA FACTORY SHOP MANUAL....

BTW, your spelling and grammar are both atrocious...

Stay in school...!!!?

P.S. 

Given the context clues from your post, the cam(s) have a 90% chance of being installed incorrectly....
