This morning i changed my oil filter on my 07 KX450 and the top bolt (the long one) has somehow stripped itself. The thread on the bolt looks perfect but it just slides in and out of the hole. I can see slight metal shavings on the bolt when I put it in then bring it out. What will need to be replaced? This has never happened before. Like I said the bolt and its threads look perfect.

When you put it in, pay particular attention to puting it in straight and also to keeping metal shavings out of your cases.

i bought a helicoil kit for the bolt. Should i just use the inserts or should I do the entire process of drilling the hole and creating new threads with everything that came in the kit? Thanks for your help

Clean the theads out with a q-tip and put a 5mm longer bolt in. The hole is threaded about 9 mm deeper!

j-man. I looked at their website. What do you do about the flange at the top of it? Wouldn't that keep the oil filter cover from seating properly?
Also, can you tell us what size to order and what size drill/tap to use?
Mine hasn't stripped yet but it's feeling kind of "soft" when I try to tighten it; I have a feeling it won't be long until I need to get mine fixed.

Each kit comes with a drill, several inserts, install tool and a counterseat tool that allows the flange part to set flush with your case. You get the kit the size of whatever bolt size. The depth of the bolts also make a difference.

You said or implied that you used these to fix the problem often. If you could give us a part # for the kit it would be a great help. Mine's not stripped out yet so if I can keep from removing the bolt to measure it and just get the part ordered to fix it that would be great. I'd also like to offer the info you provide in the sticky section for future reference since it seems to be a common problem.

You only measure the depth that the bolts goes into the case, not the length of the bolt. We have kits in all sizes, but the Part #1610 is for the kit that I use for the oil bolt. You can order inserts as needed, but you need the kit first.

All you did was bought yourself some time. Plan on the fix in the future.

j-man: I contacted one of the companies on the distributor's list about getting the kit and so far they haven't got back with me. What company do you get yours from?

Hopes that helps.
By the was we just did a Oil Drain plug on a kx250 that had stripped out completly. Fixed with no leaks with Timesert.

I think the standard bolt is alittle short.
