ok so i go pick up my hotcam stage 1 today and on the box is a sticker that says 00-07 xr650r. so i go back and the parts guy looks up one for the L. it is the same part number! the stage 1 hotcam is the same number for the 600r, 650l AND 650r. is this right?

Not right. XR600 uses the same cam as the 650L.

XR650L stage1 -> 1004-1

XR650R stage1 -> 1009-1
XR650R stage2 -> 1010-2

And physical appearance, the L is almost twice as long with a lobe for each rocker, the R has only 3 lobes.
