YZ vs WR

Hey everyone. Fairly new to the board, this has probably been posted a few times. I couldn't find anything with searching.

I'm getting a bike this winter and I've always had the YZ. Now I can't decide if I want to go with a WR. Mainly for the headlight. I would swap out the stock headlight and get an aftermarket one. My buddy has one on the KTM and it looks sick. My question is what are the other main differences? Weight, maintenance, things like that? I don't know much about the WR and just wanted everyones options. Thanks for any help. :worthy:

i would agree that if u primarily ride moto, you would be much happier with a yz. The wr is a heavier bike with softer suspension, so not exactly the same thing as a yz. From what i hear they are more reliable, not shure why though. Oh, and to get them to preform like they should, if u dont already know u have to do all of the "free mods", i think thumperfaq.com can help you out with those.:worthy:

Hop on the yamaha site and check out the differences. To over simplify, if you want to just buy a bike and ride it as-is then for off road you should really check out the WR. If you primairily ride moto then you'll probably be happer with the YZ.

I agree 100% with every post here. It's heavier so if you ride offroad, it's a stellar bike, if you ride moto-x you will be disapointed as the weight and high center of gravity mostly from the Battery will drive you nuts at the track. Also there are distinct gearing and suspension differences as well. I started with the WR, but my best choice was selling it and gettting the YZ...

The YZ is lighter, lighter feeling, more powerful, and has real race bike suspension. It's a real race bike.

OTOH, the WR has an electrical system, and if lights are important, you might want to start with the WR. You can ditch the battery and the e-start and save quite a bit more weight, and the engine can be made to exactly match the YZ. Green sticker in California, too.

It depends for what use you want the bike. If you are riding Enduro the WR is the best choice. It has the same power with the YZ but it's heavier. You can get rid of some weight though by changing the exhaust pipe,the handlebars,foot pegs etc. That's what i did and i ''won'' -10kg.

For motocross the YZ will do the job easily...

what about after all the free mods are done and a yz header/pipe are added? Closer to yz power? My wr has those mods done and I honestly can't see it getting much more powerful than that, but to be fair, I've never been on a yz450. Someone might have some feedback on that. Take an 07 wr450f, do all the free mods, jetting, airbox, grey wire, yz header/exhaust, how does it compare power-wise compared to a stock yz450?

My dad has an 05 WR450 and I have an 07 YZ450. We ride mainly desert and both bikes are great. Due to the fact my dad is older, he loves the electric start, softer suspension, and the kick stand. I unplugged his bike for him when he purchased it, it wasn't that hard but it was still a chore. It really woke the bike up and it now runs as intended. When I bought my YZ, I set it up for desert racing (damper, tank, gearing) added gas, and took it out. The power doesn't even compare, the YZ has more every where. I think it just really depends what kind of riding you are looking do do. You can't go wrong with either bike, but for me, at my age, I would take the YZ any day of the week.

The electric start is the biggest plus of the WR. But, spending the time jetting, uncorking, and removing smog stuff is a big turn off.

If I where buying a new Yamaha 450 tomorrow, it would be a YZ. :worthy:

i got 07 YZ450F and in australian bush the wr is more suited. the big fly wheell sucks and the gearing is too close. i red line mine all the time.:worthy:

Still love my YZF over me mates 07 WR450f , but i do have trouble with slow stuff when he has no trouble. slow work heats the clutch up also the motor starts to get hot. (ask me the best way to kill a bike is to heat that 1.1liter of oil up riding slow) .:worthy:

I like my yz 450 because I can remove the headlight, pmb silent insert, rear fender and kickstand in about 30 minutes to go to the mx track. I couldn't do that with the wr. https://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/garage.php?do=viewattachment&attachmentid=48374

IMO, the only big and most expensive difference between the 2 is the wr tranny ($600 I've been told)

Thanks for all the help guys. The only reason I was really looking at the WR was for the light. But I want the lighter weight bike for moto. I'm not a big fan of the electric start so I think I'll go with the YZ.

Now if I can only sell my streetbike I'd go buy the YZ 450F tomorrow. :worthy:
