It might be easier to find a bike already plated. The DMV is starting to look closer at titles and bikes before making them legal.

The only addition required to add to the BajaDesigns kit would be a mirror. In Ohio,
you need the bike inspected after you install the kit by the BMV. It might not be a bad idea to fit DOT knobbies. In about 6 weeks (assuming your bike passed the inspection) you will receive a title listing the bike as a "Manufactured Vehicle". This is the same type of title you would get on rebuilding a wrecked road bike.

Before you go and buy all sorts of D/S parts... Take your MSO down to your local BMV and ask for a street title. We have never had to inspect a bike. My Bro did his XR400, My buddy did a CR250 2 stroke. My 625SXC was done as well as my Bro's 450MXC. All just needed a signed piece of paper stating the street items were installed.

if you bought the bike new and have the mso its not too bad

i did mine across the pond and i have a motorcycle title

watch how you do the paperwork.. you DO NOT WANT A RECONSTRUCTED TITLE. there is ways to get a clean title for it
the value of the bike goes way down and you cant use it as loan value to borrow against it if you have to.

is the kit i used

take your time and dont jump in. do it right so its solid. then do the conversion... paperwork first

OK let's get some info first...

1. what bike and year is it?
2. when did you buy it?
3. what paper work do ya have?

Here's an example.... We just bought a couple 2004 KTM 85SX's. Got them from a guy who's kids raced them. He didn't have MSO's(Manufactures Certificate of Origin) cuz he didn't ride them on public land and never needed OHV stickers(or a plate). We had to go to the original selling dealer to get a copy of the MSO and get it signed off to us in order to get an Ohio OHV sticker. A bill of sale is NOT good enough for the State of Ohio. If I needed a MSO for a sticker... I'm sure you'll need it for a plate as well. Take the time to get your plate or at least an Ohio OHV sticker before you waste money on dual sport parts for a bike that you may not be able to register in Ohio due to not having a MSO or OHIO OFFROAD title or OHIO ONROAD title. You will need one of the 3 items to get started. Ohio is SUPER EASY to street title a dirt bike.. With at least a little bit of legal paperwork

One more thing... A MSO will be traded in for an Ohio title(either on or off road) when you register a bike into your name.

glad to the hear ohio is easy to title a bike

i don't have any idea what year the bike is or what model

but that is because i haven't bought it yet, i'm considering getting a dual sport like a DRZ400S but am interested in converting a dirt bike (like an XR400 or CRF450, etc), it opens up more options as far as buying, plus better performance

it sounds like if i get a bike i need to make sure i get the MSO from the owner, is this right?

OH OK you're golden! I thought you had some old bike with no paper work. If you buy a used bike. Make sure it has a title and you are gonna be fine.

I've dual sported 3 bikes in Ohio.  As stated earlier, it's a piece of cake.  Just take your title to the title office at your county court house (not the DMV).  They should have a form that you sign, stating that your bike has all equipment required to be street legal.  NO INSPECTION IS REQUIRED.  Many title offices will get confused and send you away to get an inspection, but they're wrong, it is NOT required.  After you sign the form, they will charge you $6 for the new street legal title, and you will surrender your existing title/MSO to them.  Take the new title to the DMV and get your plate.  It's that easy.

Yep Ohio is easy.... Thumper Talk member Trailpunisher has an Ohio street legal dual sported Hon-Duh XR70! It's funny as hell to see him doing 200 mile dual sport rides on that lil' sucker:applause:

Ohio has to be the easiest state.  I have plates for 2 bikes both xrs.  Go to the bmv and tell them you want a change of body type form.  It costs $7 and you will get your bike transfered from off road to mc which is motorcycle.  But it is up to you to make sure that your bike is really street legal.  You will get a list of what the bike has to have.

Dunno if you have craiglist there but here in AZ I've seen both the CRF250 and CRF450 street legal.

Mess around on there and you may find the bike your looking for.

And it is getting to the point here they even want an 'offroad' type licsense for a dirtbike(on state offroad trails).

Its all about theft and making sure the bike is legit.

Like said before,if you have a title you should be fine.
Here in AZ there's a few places that will 'street legal' a dirtbike.

I'm personally looking at TTR's.

heres the link for craiglist, maybe your city is on it.

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a 2001 DRZ 400E and converting it to a street legal machine.  This is a great thread for me, but I'm wondering if something changed in 2008.  I have called two auto-title agencies and they tell me that I need to have my bike inspected by the Ohio State Patrol before I can exchange my "dirt bike" title for a street bike title.  So I call the inspection garage and they tell me it's a body change only, not a self-build, and the inspection is not necessary.

Has anyone been able to get a new title and plates for their dirt bike in 2008?  I live in Franklin County if that helps.

Thanks!

yes i did my 08 kx250f about 2 months ago, just go to dmv and have them transfer your "off road only" into motorcycle, takes 10 minutes and cost me $10. and no inspection needed anywhere in ohio if you do it this way. but ya sign saying its legal and your golden, good luck, and dont get worrid its simple

When I moved to Ohio last year, from Michigan, I had to have the VIN inspected.  My YZ was already plated in Michigan and the only thing they gave me a hard time about was the fact that it didn't have an odometer, but it was a harder time than they gave a guy at work at the same time

The guy that I work with went to have a bike he had purchased changed into his name and the lady at the BMV made a mistake and but on the title that it was a motorcycle and not a dirt bike.  She asked him if he needed it changed back and he said no that it was OK.  Two months later he went back and got a plate for is CR250 2smoker after he put a SICASS Racing DS Kit on it with a stator from Dennis Kirk.

So it is not that hard as others have said

Thanks for the help.  I'm going to call the title agency I usually go to and mention this to the lady I have been dealing with.  I have a feeling she thinks that I am building this bike, not just adding headlight turn signals, horn and mirror.  The state highway patrol officer I spoke to at the inspection garage seemed to know what he was talking about.

I am buying this '01 DRZ400.  In fact the seller offered to drop it off at my house for me today at lunch, really nice guy.  So I'm excited to get this thing street legal and ride!!!!
