Do the BRP's get better brakes?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure that they are close to the same. If you want more braking power, get on oversize brake rotor. It should come with a matching bracket so the caliper is in the correct spot for the larger disk. The larger disk helps to dissipate more heat. It makes the brakes more resistant to fading.

Getting an oversize rotor for a XR350 might be a bit of an issue though. The XL600 and XR600 till 90 used the same rotor. The design of the rotor changed a little in 91, but it is still the same 240mm diameter. The 91-2000 XR600 and XR650R. The disk on the 650L is a little larger at 256mm.

the front 650l and 650r caliper is the same for what its worth.

I checked those some time back and I'm "pretty" sure the L caliper was $50 more than the R. That's why I thought maybe they'd beefed it up a bit given it's street duties. Seemed like that would make sense. Diff. # for sure.

The problem is my front is very mush. I took the caliper off and there was oily spooge on everything. Cleaned everything up with brake cleaner and a rag and sanded the pads, BUT next to the caliper piston is another round metallic circular piece the same size as the piston. Don't know what it does but the metal is cracked on the surface and part of the otherwise flat circular part is pushed in a bit. Don't know what it does but I assume that piece should be solid, do maybe I'm losing fluid there.?

Secondly when I took the master cylinder cover off one of the recessed threads are really buggered up. They had a sheet metal screw going into the mess and it screwed down more or less tight, but can't be ideal. So I'm thinking junk the whole mess and buy a newer, hopefully upgraded brake and be done with it.

So I've asked here about the big bikes, on the CRF site since they are the hotrod bikes, (R not withstanding), and the 250 site.

I've checked Service Honda and they all have different part # but no specifications to check against.

The XR350's came with two piston calipers. Is one piston shot or is it in backwards? If you can't get it out hit ebay and get another caliper. Not 100% sure but the 80's XR600 caliper may be the same part. Check the part numbers.

I don't know brakes well enough to know what's wrong with it. I can change pads and clean them up and bleed them, that's about it.

The problem with an ebay caliper is it's a 22 y/o part. WIth no warranty. I bought an 88 xr600 caliper to use and it's in no better shape though it looks clean. Thus, the wanting newer parts. 22 y/o brake parts gonna be problematic.
