water pump seals bad-help!!!

Recommended Posts

well i noticed today that my coolant was leaking profusely outta the little weep hole in the bottom of my water pump housing...im guessing that means a seal went out in there or my impeller crapped out right?????? or could there be other problems? so what all do i need to buy and what is the process for changing the seals and/or the impeller? thanks.

You are right, it's the waterpump seal. I fixed the same one month ago. It is no big issue. Only thing to look at are the groves in the impeller shaft. Because of groves i did twice. If there a groves in the shaft you have to change the shaft also, or it will leaking again after a few hours. If you have the parts, thro the bike to the side, reassemble the side cover, change the shaft and impeller, assemble all together. Work takes about 1 hour.

ok i cant get a new impeller by sat nite so i went ahead and got the seals @ least for now. they are inexpensive so itll be worth it....what do i need to do to do it the quik way? pull the pump cover, use a 1/4" impact to zip the impeller off, pull the seals, use deep socket to drive new seals on, carefully zip impeller back on and put cover back on? being sure to lube the seals....

That's the quick way to break the drive tab off the impeller shaft and ruin your weekend, yes. Don't do it. Remove the right side crankcase cover and hold the shaft with a wrench like you're supposed to. It's the only way to get both seals in and inspect the shaft, anyway.

Do you have a step by step process for doing this? My 01 426 is leaking out of the weep hole also so this is something I will be doing this weekend or next. I am very mechanical inclined I have just never touched a dirt bike. I have already got the water pump cover and impeller off so that is where I am at and I just dont want to screw something else up in the process.
