I will try to make a long story short...
XR4, riding mostly dirt in RenoNV, truckeeCA some winter trips to Hollister hillsCA. Played with carb. some trying to run better around tops of hills and in TruckeeCA, gordens mods to air box and sightly bigger main jet helped. I have had the bike for 1 year + Its always had a slight hesitation at the crack of the throttle, low RPM. but plug always looked good.
I got caught out towards dusk a couple times and started to notice my mix of UFO/Baja D. kit from original owner was starting to grenade, sometimes blinkers somtimes none, and etc. with high low beam, horn, break light...
Not the saviest electric wise I decided to take it to a local shop because what I could see, the installation of the what was on my Honda was not good. The mech called me back and confermed it was bad. he said if he piece parted the order to fix it the labor would be more trying to mesh new and old stuff. If he ordered a hole new Baja Designs kit, less labor would be less $$$ over all. I took the bike back home to see if I could just do the kit myself. looking online and doing the math It actaully started to look better to take it back to the shop because they could get the Baja D. kit at a great price and I definatly wanted it done right. Ironically that day a buddy of mine wanted to ride so we made plans but then the bike would not run. It would start reluctantly with the choke on full, Idle really high (tryed adjusting) then if I started to switch choke off it would die emedaitly, plug super dry and black, major hesitation from throttle. I tryed to read in my manual or T. Talk to see what was up. From what I gathered its possible that the grenading electroncis might be the cause of the poor running and when I called the Mech. at the shop he also said that was likely. Hoping that was true and alittle myfed by the bike running good before the first visit to the shop, I took It back to him, had him order and install new Baja D. kit. picked up the XR, now back home with nice new electronics and the engine showing all the same bad symptoms... Mech at shop said clean Carb., new gas, bigger jet...
Sorry about the langth but if anyone can help with this mystery I would apperciate it.

If it was running correctly before, then you shouldn't need to change the jetting again. Otherwise, your mechanic is probably correct that the carb needs to be cleaned. I would suggest clean air filter, clean carb, new plug, and check valve adjustment just to be safe.

I had same choke / no-run symptoms a while back. The bike ran PERFECT only one week previous. Changed the gas, drained the carb of the old stuff & BAM! All was well again.

Good luck
