I am in the process of getting a new head pipe and muffler for my 02 xr400 and was looking for some input. I was thinking of going with the XR's only head pipe and maybe a Supertrapp slip on. I like the idea of being able to adjust it and keep the noise in check. The guys at XR's only told me the two would not fit each other, but not sure if I beleive him. Has anybody had any experience with this combo or useful suggestions? Thanks everybody

If you have the stock exhaust, I would recommend doing Gordon's Mods. That's the best way to keep the noise down. My XR4 came with a White Bros E-Series pipe and I've done a lot to quite it down.
Not sure about how various parts fit together, but many pipe brands now have quite core inserts of some type. There's plenty of options out there.

Why are you replacing the stock header? Are you doing it for a particular type of riding you do, like fast desert? If not, I'd advise staying with the stock header. If you do trail riding or slow technical stuff, climbing and such, your low end torque will suffer with the bigger diameter header.
I'd do your homework on the Supertrapp before you buy it. I think general concensus is that it's a poor quality piece. I think your money would be better spent on the WB E-series, E2, FMF Q2, etc..

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm having second thoughts about the header now that you mention the low end will suffer. I wonder if just a good aftermarket slip on will do the trick. I removed the snorkel and I do want a little more up top but not to the point where it will wipe out the great low end I'm used to. Thanks again....this site is great!

Yes it will. Save yourself a bunch of miney & just get the HRC high-flow spark arrestor & a turn down tip (please). Don't forget to re-jet. Good idea to nix the header too. Low end will suffer & it really isnt worth the money unless your in serious competition. Cheers!

"Turn down tip" Does that serve as the spark arrestor, or something else? I have not had time to go to the link you provided, but I will tonight. thanks again

A turn-down tip helps with noise emissions. The sound waves are directed to the ground which reduces reverberation of the exhaust note. A turn down tip is a good way to reduce noise without losing power.

The HRC end cap isn't a USFS approved SA. It will pass the stick test, but if a Ranger wants to be a stickler its just as good as having no SA at all.

If thats the case the FS guy gave me some bum info. Wouldn't be the first time they've screwed up though.

I just installed this exact system - HRC Baffle with "Quiet Products" turn down tip/ insert. I gotta say that I'm really happy with how quiet it is and I haven't lost any power (from what I can tell).
I had a stock Honda spark arrestor with the baffle cut out with a hole saw - It was VERY open and VERY loud....I don't recall if the HRC baffle was USFS approved though... I'll have to check when I get home.
