Best way to sell an XR400?

A friend wants to sell his XR400 and asked for my help. I frequent the DRZ forum, and know that each forum has it's own experts. Since this is a discontinued model, with an extremely loyal following, maybe that makes a difference from selling a current production bike?

He wants to sell with the least hassle, so he won't put it in the paper or E-Bay. I've sold parts here on the TT Classifieds, but never a whole bike. Is this the place? Is there an XR's Only website that I should be looking at?

And what would be a fair price? Oh, it's an '04, Baja Designs kit, 900 miles. He just doesn't ride it. (Obviously)

Thanks for any help you can give.

most people I know buy and sell their motorcycles using www.craigslist.com listed only under the area/location where they would like to sell it.

I believe that your best bet is to put it in the Cycle Trader
As for price, look in the Cycle Trader and see what everyone else is asking.

in California, 2003 are listed for about $3000+ and early models going for about $2000+

I've tried Craigslist, had mine in the classifieds here on TT for a month now, local traders guides, newspaper, I even put it on Myspace and have had 2 legitimate hits. It's just not a good time to sell I believe.

I found mine on Thumper Talk. I tried to buy one from a guy on Ebay but he turned out to be a flake. By the way mine is a 2002 with Baja Designs kit, and plated in California. It was completely stock except for a few Gordon mods and re-jet and probably had around 1000 miles on it. It was in very good condition. I paid $3,500 for mine.

I found mine on cycletrader. ADVrider.com has a big readership and a good classifieds section.

Another vote for Craig's List in my opinion. I'm on there several times a day because it is LOCAL. I bought my XR250 and the XR70 w/n the past 3 months on Craig's List. Great place (FREE too!) for larger items that are tough to ship and you need them to be fairly close to go examine and test drive.

I found mine on Autotrader.com picked it up for 4,000.00 with all sorts of mods and extras. Like; aluminum hitch ramp and hauler, extra gears, tires, tubes, grips, cables, Gps, trailtech, stock tank baja kit plated in CA. etc. etc. only had about 1500 mi or less. Great condition. You just need to list it and someone will hit on it, they are great bikes. Hey, I know.. you could buy it for an extra bike.

Craigslist rocks! I've sold many things on CL... I just picked up a '97 in excellent condition with a whole list of goodies for $1800! It's a great medium and it's free! :ride:

I buy and sell everything on Craigslist. It's usually a local deal, and that's what I like about it. No shipping, no hassle, we meet, we negotiate, we pay cash, and we go.

The downside is that you get a limited audience, and you may have to wait a while to sell it. My XR250R was listed for about 4 weeks before I bought it. After that time the guy was really willing to take a price hit to get rid of it, so prepare for that when selling.

I just read an artical on the OCRegister about craigslist. You can get an Asian for 160 roses in Irvine O.C. You are right, you can buy anything on Craigslist.

IMHO if you really want to sell a bike , and you truly want it gone price it to sell it fast. I sold my 650R here at TT with lots of aftermarket stuff on it at a bargain price because I was truly through with it and wanted it gone. Took a week and it sold to a person who lived about 30 miles from me. He came to look at it and was suprised at the condition and how little use it had on it. He shelled out cash fast and I gave him the title and he and it was gone. Some folks price their bikes high with room to "haggle" included and I do not care for that nor do I have time for tire kickers. You will never get out of a bike what you put into it and that is the hard truth. You have to ask yourself what is my bottom dollar on it and post it up. If that happens to be a bargain price and someone gets a "deal" it will come back to you somewhere in life.

THANKS EVERYBODY. My friend has decided to store it for the winter and sell it in the spring, hopefully for a better price. Now if I can just get him to come to Moab and ride with me again this fall, maybe he'll fall in love with it again?
