Another proud 08 450f Owner Pic and Ride Report!

Recommended Posts

I'm sitting at home watching the boys today so I thought I'd give you a long winded break down of my new machine!

100_0349.jpg

I brought my 08 home last Tuesday and was able to completely go through the bike and grease the bearings and torq check it. I'll add as those of you who have not gone through yours, you should. As well as clean the break rotors and pads off with contact or break cleaner. They get shipped with a coating to prevent rust and once that is burned into the rotors, well your brakes will never perform at their best. Dont be afraid, its only nuts and bolts and a little time. The Swing arm, linkage and steering stem bearings need a good waterproof grease. The grease they ship the bike with was like engine builders molly lube and minimal amounts at that. But thats all done now and I feel better.

Jetting. My bike was a pain to start from the Dealer with the shorty pipe. Here is what I found for Jet settings: 160 Main. Jet needle clip #3 slot. 45 Pilot. 1 3/4 Turns Fuel Screw. Per Phone Call to Dr D. This is the base line I was given for the new Dr D pipe I was installing. 162 Main, jet needle clip #4 Slot, 45 Pilot. I adjusted the fuel screw out 2 1/2 turns during the break in riding sessions. Seems to be running good now.

 By the way, Getting to Carburator was a job in it self. 2 hours it took me to change all the jetting specs. I had to Remove the sub frame, Shock, and fuel tank to get to the top of the carb. No room to spin the carb over. Not an easy task.

I was however very suprised at how light the shock was though.

At this point I removed the swingarm and linkage and greased everything. Also noted every nut and bolt on this bike was bone dry so a little lube on them as well. No need in corrosion!

Suspension: Let me just say, everything was out of adjustment. Fork rebound left fork to right was not the same, one was 8 the other at 13. Comp was the same deal. I went through the shock as well. I adjusted and recorded where I set everything to. For now I just need to get the suspension broke in, but at least everything is even. For what its worth Dirt Bike, and Motocross action has published some suspension settings that you could use as a base line? Or Go by the Owners Service Manual.

Ok.. now the Break in Ride Report!

100_0356.jpg

Parts I changed before I rode.

I replaced the clutch lever and hot start set up with th ASV. very nice. The front brake line hose clamp was exchanged for a nice compact carbon fiber job. A Grey Tag 49 t Sprocket. Aftermarket Fuel mixture screw for easy adjustments. Last but not least a new Dr.D Exhaust System.

The First ride day. What a blast! I'm an over 35 Vet novice mid pack mx rider. 165, 6ft tall. Before this bike I was riding and doing some mx racing with a n 05 YZ250f a couple of years. This bike was a big step up. Aside form the suspension break in, this bike rode awesome. I rode at a local mx gp style mx track. I felt right at home and very confident on this bike. In and out of corners were a breeze. The steering worked well for me. I liked the steering better on this bike than my 250f. It seemed to go where I wanted when I wanted. I love the power outout. Nice and smooth on the bottom. Best part was hitting a jump out of a tight corner. Steady roll on of throttle and she was gone.. No rip your arms off affect. Predictable power. I never got to a point where I was worried that I had given it too much throttle was going to find myself air lifted because of the sudden explosive hit. Dont get me wrong the YZ450f is a rocket fast. But it does it very smooooothly.. At any time I could raise the front wheel over holes, ruts, whatever. I only rode half throtle as I needed to break it in. Some times I could go through a corner in third with a little or no clutch pull and some times I would down shift to 2nd. Passes came easy with a stedy roll of the throttle as well. Again I was loving the smoother power transitions. In the air, this bike would go where ever I shifted my body weight no problem. Very light and nimble feeling. I also have a 05 KTM 450 exc. The power delivery seems quite close, however, the YZ obviously jumps to life much quicker!

I am indeed happy with this machine. My confidence was so high on this bike I found myself attempting to/and jump things I normally wouldnt on the 250f only because I would have to get the revs so high on that bike and well that means I gotta work harder to go real fast. Faster than my novice over the hill tail needs to go. Yes I'm getting lazy and this new bike is gonna do most of the work for me. How sweet is that!

  I'm pretty sure I'm gonna improve my lap times on this baby. It was a lot easier to ride than the 250f and I was not nearly as tired after a 15 or 20 min moto session.:applause:

There was my $7000. Q&A.. Money well spent!

This process is entirely unnecessary ( I hate to tell you that now, but it's true). You can change the jets without moving the carb at all.

Of course, the tank does have to come off to remove the needle, but how much different is that?

The JD jetting instructions also say you can jet w/out taking the carb out BTW

If that is an 08 spec Dr. D pipe, it does not look any different than his 06/07 spec "lowboy" pipe for the 450. He designed the lowboy pipe to be used with his radiator lowering kit.. I saw one of his pipes you had to remove to get the top oil filter cover bolt out????? It was a lowboy....anyway, that pipe looks the same...06/07 spec

As far as I know that is 06-07 Pipe. It was ordered by the dealer for me last Monday 9/24. When I called Dr D Tues 9/25 to get Jet Specs, I was told that they had not released an 08 version yet. Too bad, cause days later in a Press release there is now a new 08 pipe!?!?. "Damn it Jim" "Missed it by That Much"

So be it, I'm happy with the setup I have now. This is the 3rd Dr D exhaust sytem I've owned and cant find anything to complain about.

Rode the 08 Sun back to back with my 07..nice bike..feels maybe

a little more planted on some turns. I run a maxxis SI and 94 mm of sag

and my 07 turns inside on any 450 with RM high bars.

The 08 is perfect for 98% of the guys that ride

I did 2 motos with a young guy who rode a YZF in 07 and

made every SX and he only went up one tooth on the rear

and loved the power. Get in shape and run it hard ya chunky chickens!

If you are ever in South Georgia look me up and you can ride my

sand track. You will forget about a $800 pipe

The 08 is very quiet  and as fast as GA426 owner will ever

need  Just BSing Dave...

And I also rode the 08 KXF...uhhh...turns like a 77 Pinto with bald tires.

Where did you see that press release????? I talked to a lady at Dubach Friday and she said nothing in the making as of now for a 08 pipe said they are happy with 06/07 set up. Thats the pipe they tested in MXA on the 08 and loved it.

https://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=558419

Another posted this thread?!?!? I dont know!?!? Like I said I was told what you were by the Dubach People last week> Thus, the reason why I put the question marks in this statement. "Too bad, cause days later in a Press release there is now a new 08 pipe"!?!?."

Who knows?

Either way I'm happy with my setup, I've got no complaints Yet!

I got my 08 YZ450F yesterday. It starts second or third kick, but runs really hot. After 3 - 4 minutes of idle header pipe was red. Also pops on deceleration. Any suggestions on jeting with stock muffler?

Thanks

The only change you need to make is with the mixture screw.
