Can't ride for 6 mth.rebuild or not to rebuild

My trusty 01 650r has at least 20 thousand on it (still runs great).I won't be able to ride for a while,thinking I could freshen her up while I recupe,or just leave it be??? Havn't done any internal mods just fresh oil, filters and valve adjustments(not that many but checked often)Rode very hard all the time.What do you guys think??

My valves got to the point that I did not have any adjustment left and they needed setting after a couple hundred miles. Don't wait till it goes that far. If you don't have to adjust the valves frequently, you're still good. I had 19K on mine. Usually a rebuild and valve job is recommend around 12K, but mine still ran good right to the end. I'm glad it didn't blow before I had it rebuilt.I couldn't believe how much better it ran after the top end and valve job.

Say you don't and go for a ride after you recover and it shits itself,you'll be pissed off.

Just do it. I notice every time my bike starts to not want to start on the first kick I adjust the valves(about twice a year) and the magic comes back. So they must be picky on valve condition.

6 mos is a long time. It's easy to come up with the time and money required for a build over that much time. The other great thing is that it's over winter. ...I've been rebuilding from May-Nov:bonk:

I'm usually part of the "if it isn't broke don't fix it group." However, at 20,000 your rings might be ready for replacement.

YEP i agree with everyone take your time and its something to keep ya busy and when your ready to ride youll be on a nice freshy that you can enjoy for another 20K

ya do it. give you something to do while at home. maybe cam/hicomp piston? what is stock comp?

If you ride tight stuff or rox don't do the HC piston. It makes the bike more likely to stall and you'll have to clutch more.

Another good reason to stay with the stock compression is to avoid using race fuel. It's nice to be able to use pump gas especially in remote areas like Mexico.

Thanks for all the replys.Soon as I get out of this Halo I'll pull the ole girl apart.Will just go with a 680 and mild comp.don't need that much more power.Goes faster than I need to go now!

Don't stop at the engine. Clean and regrease the swingarm, the linkage, and the head tube bearings. Perhaps paint? Make it like a new bike.

Good suggestion, watch those needle bearings.

Just had the swing arm off before my crash so I know its good to go,but will do service on fork, shock,and wheel/stem bearings.

I should probably of said I found the 650 does not lug down as well with a HC piston. JMO
