Honda parts people need more (any?) training

Recommended Posts

I just thought I'd do myself a favor, instead of drilling my pilot jet I decided to get a 55 from the local dealer.

WOW!

The first parts guy said "we don't sell non standard jets without a special order". "You shouldn't be messing with that"! If your bike isn't running right, you should call the guy you got the air filter from because there is probably something wrong with it". Next place I called I asked for a pilot jet for a keihnen carb, xr650l 42.5 (and said "it's an '07 xr650l if I have the carb size wrong"...just in case. She said "they only come in 80 to 158". I said no it's the pilot, not the main and she said thats the only jet they carry so my carb might not need a pilot.

wow

is all I can say...

Not to mention dealers but if I was ever to drive in Hollywood..... I wouldn't go to ANY dealers.

ya, I don't know whats up with that but the guy I talked to seemed like he never saw a bike before..

Kinda annoying.

I know I can go to xrsonly or similar after market and get any jet I want but shouldn't Honda be the first source?

Really...

I should be able to call Honda and get any jet I want...

O well.. its late.. good day riding and working on my bike.. nuff said....

take your old jet in and tell em i want this jet in a number XX and see what they say. If they keep trying to give you any slack ask to talk to the manager and let em know you coming in for a part that you want and they should have some bit of knowledge and not try to "school" you about something you didnt ask for. Customer service makes any company, I HATE when people are ignorant and ill let em know Tactfully (sometimes) LOL

Unfortunately, trying to find a parts person who doesn't have blinders on is getting next to impossible. At a local shop there are two extremes; one guy who's been doing it for years and will even make an effort to find a part in an aftermarket catalog or the new (and young) guy who can't even order the correct part when you point to the part on the computer screen and say "I want that.".

I've been through the jet ordering thing with them also. If you stray from the standard Honda jets, you have to buy 5 minimum. I found I can order the same jets they order for me from the TT store (factory Keihin) cheaper than from them. Shipping is always less than sales tax on jets.

I order everything I can from the dealer. Sure I might pay a little more-but it has been my experience that you usually get the right part the first time, and the wait time to get the part is actually LESS THAN what it is from after-market sources.

I'm trying to figure out if your serious or not. I've tried many times to find a dealer with good service and I would be willing to pay little more for it. Sadly I have found the complete opposit most times. Closest I've come is a little father and son small engine shop near by. My order gets messed sometimes but they do try real hard and will slide a beer accross the counter at you if there's no other customers there. Maby that's why my parts are never the right ones.

I did find a decent one (dealer) but I had to drive 60 miles to the desert.

Part was in stock and now in my hands waiting till after work Friday for me to go and tear my week old (i gotta laugh at that one) bike apart again and do the rest of the carb mods.

Thanks for all the help. O and I didnt really drive there just for the part, I was working about 2 miles from there and went on lunch. Not THAT desperate...yet

years ago when i worked at a large dealership as a tech,They would go through about 5 parts people a season. They would pay them like they worked at burger king. Us tech(s) would have fun having them look for parts like cams for a kx 500 or a battery on a cr 250.

Like most have stated, my local dealers or their reps (parts guys, service guys) suck too! I would never want to leave my bike at any of the local dealers for any repair. Any repair I have not done myself, I will learn to do before I leave my bike with these guys. Ordering parts, I too had problems with jets needed. And most local dealers do not stock any of the parts I have needed, so why order parts from the dealer and wait, when I can order from Service Honda or others online and get the part I need in the same amount of time, at a lot less cost?

LOL, an update to this thread...

I finally got around to putting my slow jet in today after work.

They gave me the wrong one! Jeeze.

I called a shop I used to go to and although they don't sell the jets, the guy told me there are 3 different pilot jet versions over the years on the XLR.

Is this true? He said the threads are in different places up the jet.

Well, thats it. I'm ordering online.

I'm not even taking my bike to the dealer for the "complimentary" first service!

I'm just glad I have experience wrenchin and the tools I need to fix everything myself (with some tech help from this board  ).

If I do need some special tool, like for re stacking the gears in the tranny, I'll buy the dang thing. Not to offend anyone on the board whos in the bussiness, just in my area... I've had really bad luck.
