I am looking for an XR 250 and found one. I had a super hard time starting it, once i got it started it ran well. The gal was selling it for just under 2K. The bike was in OK condition, didn't look wrecked and it felt tight. The bike is also left out in the rain. I offered her $1400 and she politely declined. I like the bike but I don't think it is worth that much. My XR200 starts with one kick and is a little lower which is a plus for me as I am only 5'9".

Any thoughts on this?

The year makes a big difference. If it's a newer XR250, they still go for good money, often times more than a 400. I think there may be fewer out there. If it starts hard, it could simply be the valves needing to be adjusted.
2K for a newer XR400 is a really good price I think. If it's older, keep looking, especially if it sat in the rain. Did you look the bike over really well?

Didn't look over the bike that well. I liked it other than the hard starting. Surprised they leave it out.

I live in Hawaii and our pool of bikes are smaller so I think we pay more.

The price sounds fair to me if the bike is in decent shape. Like Sbabs said a valve adjustment might be all that it needs to make it start easier. It's also easy to re jet as well. Look it over carefully again if it's not gone.

my 99 250 used to be a bitch to start. i did a few mods, and rejetted it and it starts 1 or two kicks now so it probably just needs the valves adjusted or a rejet. it might have been cause it hasnt been started in a awhile.

check for rust,if its in fair condition its worth 1800-2000 and you will like it alot more than your 200.

I paid $2100.00 in april for a 01 250 it is in perfect condition original tires, sprockets, chain all it needed was the Handlebars replaced. Owner claimed it had 367 miles it was hard to start, i changed the plug, jetted the carb, opened the air box and stuck on a FMF power core 4 now it starts in two kicks and runs Exc.

I bought my '01 XR250 in June. The guy started out at $2,400 with some crappy gear. I let him keep that stuff and walked away with it for $1,600. Very happy with that price. He was the original owner and it is 100% stock. Very clean and it runs great.

I'm 6'5", 250 lbs and it pulls me through the woods and up the hills very well. Not sure what I want to do to it first, but I'd like those wrap around handlebar guards, maybe a skid plate too.

dyrtmon,

THANKS!! I'm happy with it. It really runs great. So far just replaced the rear tube and that's it. (Besides 2 air filter cleanings and oil/filter changes and a plug...gotta do the maintenance!)

I can't believe I walked away with a toy for $1,600....I have wanted a Honda Rincon (7k) for yrs and am really liking having a DBIKE!
