Has Anyone Install LED Turn Signals? - Are they bright and safe enough?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm converting a 650R to a dual sport. I've got the rear brake LED lamp and rear brake actuator installed but I'm not sure what to do about blinkers.

Has anyone installed those flash new LED flush mounted blinkers on the fronts or rears? I'm looking for ideas so if you can post a pic that would be awesome.

I'm slightly concerned though about the LED's as they're so small. I know they're bright but, would I be a fool for using these? They seem to be all the rage on crotch rockets.

Thanks!

PS - Also looking for ideas on the brake switch and relays. Should I just get one from Baja designs? The bike already has the dual lights and hi-output stator installed.

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

Do you have any kind of inspection in your state? If you do then your lighting will need to be DOT approved. As fas as I know many LED tail lights and all of the flush mount turn signals are not DOT approved and as such are not legal. Most of the ministalk turn signals are not DOT approved either.

Now if you just want something then perhaps they are not so bad. For me the attraction for the flush mounts in the rear is survivability. Turn signals mounted on stalks just don't take many ground impacts. I have been thinking of installing both flush and ministalks. Then when the stalks get ripped off I still have something until I can replace the stalk signal.

In FL you do not need Turn signals... But I use them to keep "the boys" off my tail. I have flush mount turn signals, non led models which have held up well. A year without any issues. Go to my garage to see the set up...

My lights are from BD's, or kit I should say.

I'm using these from superbrightleds.com:

cheapish, quite bright, and mounted in such a way that survivability isn't an issue. (+1 cleonard, excellent description). The viewing angles at the rear aren't great though, but that's a function of how I've mounted them. Might have to revise that design...
