Please for the sake of our future tell me you are only 5 years old and you just started your first week of first grade. Its like you are trying to beat the english language into submission with bad grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Ah, RC30- we have a saying.... "There's one in every crowd." Apologies for our poorly behaved participant.

Regardless if you weren't "really" trying to make fun of him, your childish outburst was nevertheless derogatory. Furthermore, I'm certain sure your Italian is not as good as his, just like your French is woefully inferior to mine. Carry on with the online translators jacka$$. :ride:

Either way, its atrocious

Sorry if also this time I have made you return your headache, with all these words written in my native tongue you won't have understood anything, have patience, now I resume my school books and I will try to translate in English, even if I am afraid to increase your migraine.

Now I sure you won't need an aspirin considering that "you know" the Italian language.

Thanks Cleonard, martinfan30 and Maroast for your answers and for your understanding to my linguistic difficulties, I hope not to have induced you the same headache of focallenght.

Piero

sorry rc but it annoys me that some people can be so anal , please keep up your posts they are very interesting , yes every crowd has one YUP dickhead!

Well, in the end the valves hit the piston and that doesn't happen at .060" of clearance with the right valve timing. I want back and looked at the pictures and it is right there showing what happened. I would guess it won't happen next time.

Mate, the piston hit the valves because the rod snapped, not the other way around.
Maybe a manufacturing fault with the rod, or the forces involved with the larger, heavier piston and high compression. Maybe he got some bad gas and it started pinging.

rod snapped...but to me seems possible that it had some help...rod bearing or piston seizure?

I agree, should not have been caused by valve clearance...that puts compressive foroces on rod, not tensile

I have only seen two other XR650R and one XR600R engine with this same outcome. All were related to not clay testing the valve to piston clearance. One XR650R made it many miles before the bike was taken to high enough rpm to granade. The XR600R made it almost 1/10 of a mile and it was helped by a week small end. the valves hit only one side jamming the piston to a very quick stop @ TDC. This is usualy not a full hit as shown in the pictures. Stock bottom end with an after market piston, cam and thinner head gasket, it was not clay tested and the piston tapped the valves at about 6,400+ rmp causing the piston rod to shear. This is a classic case of not clay testing for propper clearance but, then again what the hell do I know:excuseme:

well, you may very well know more than I do, but it's fun to debate anyway, and it takes at least two of us to accomplish that...

so back to the topic...if the mode of failure was indeed inadequate clearance, maybe the contact deformed the piston enough to seize it, then the rod pulled apart...it's sort of one of those "chicken and egg" things isn't it

if the rod snaps first (cause of failure), natrually the piston will tag whichever valves are protruding...so how would you really know what caused what?

Normally these sort of failures are from the gudgeon seizing in the piston and little end of the rod.
The rod lets go and the piston smacks the valves.
He's got a forged piston in the thing that has no oil holes where the piston pin runs, forged piston runs circlips to hold the piston pin in place.
Normally like an endurence setup they drill holes in the piston where the pin runs.
It would be interesting to see the gudgeon out of the piston to see if there is any galling.

Don't forget British...

Seriously, some of you all don't get "out" there on the interweb enough to learn the lingo.

I really doubt valve float caused the rod to break. In fact, I prefer to think that the piston hit the valves after the rod broke. After all, the piston is intact, yet everything else came unglued. Bent valves would have made the engine either stop running or the piston break up. Just IMO.
