IMS tank on 07 WR450

Recommended Posts

Looking for some input on the 3.1gal IMS tank for the 07 WR. I'm looking for some more range on my bike but I love the stock tanks narrow feel. So anyone with an IMS tank on their 07 what's the verdict ? Where do they put the extra volume ? Does the tank droop lower or is the extra volume come through width ?

they put the fuel lower and to the sides a little...do a search about the tank.

there was a guy about 3 months ago or so who put the ims tank from a yz on is wr. looked real good too.

I have the 3.1 on my 07WR450. I pulled the decals off the stock shrounds and put them on the (required) YZ shrouds. The bike looks great and I didn't really notice any difference in feel or handling. You will need to do one of the following with your petcock-

  • Install it backwards, with the lever on the inside towards the engine
  • Buy a longer fuel line and install petcock in normal direction
  • Buy an 06 WR petcock which has the fuel line facing aft with the lever on the outside.

I just installed mine backwards..........

The 3.1 is a great tank.

Good Luck,

Doug

No one (IMS or Clarke) makes a WR specific tank you have to buy the YZ model and as mentioned by Michigan DS, you will need to purchase YZ shrouds. And I would go out and get an older model petcock so the valve is facing outward, it is a royal pain to operate if facing towards the engine...

I have the IMS 3.1 and while I am very happy with the installation and added range in mileage I am not happy with the erganomics. I rode my buddies 07 YZ with the Clarke tank and it is much narrower and carries the majority of the fuel lower so as not make the bike feel top heavy... with a full tank in my IMS, I can feel the difference big time in the center of gravity of the bike:thumbsdn: The Clarke has the same issues with the petcock, you'll either need longer fuel line (not suggested), reversal of existing WR petcock or an older WR petcock with hose connection facing towards the carb.

Having said all of this I cannot confirm the Clarke tank for the 06' - 07' YZ will fit on to the WR, I am just assuming at this point. Maybe someone here can confirm.

Seeing how you have to buy the YZ tank and shrouds, the 05 YZ petcock runs to the right and fits like a glove for $20.00. It looks good and it's not a pain in the ass to turn your fuel on and off, I did this Tuesday.?

I have this same setup. 2007 WR, IMS tank, YZ shrouds, Unabiker radiator guards, stock petcock with longer fuel line. I haven't had any troubles with this setup. I also haven't really noticed the heavier feel of the bike since it has much more fuel, nor do I notice any added width. The extra gas more than makes up for any difference in feel. It's so nice to not have to run on reserve to get home from every ride!

If he puts the 05 YZ petcock on his WR, doesn't he lose reserve? That may / may not matter but just to keep in mind.:ride:

Ya, he will, but the 03 to 06 WR petcock will work as well, and it points the right way.

I put the IMS tank on my 07 a couple of weeks ago. The range is way better, (160 Km of hard stuff no problem) in my opinion the looks are way way better, ( blue tank of course) and if you are a tall guy, you can finally hug your bike while standing, a thing you could not do with the original tank

With 3.1 gallons I just turn mine to reserve and leave it there... the pattern I am seeing is that any petcock from the steel framed era, WR or YZ will put the fuel line connection where we want it...

My reasoning for the larger tank was to not have to pit during a race so therefore I turn it on reserve and leave it there, I guess each of us would have to decide whether or not reserve is necessary or wanted... my guess is the YZ petcock is cheaper:excuseme:

I got my WR 426 petcock from a friend who had it laying around in the shop...

IS ANYONE RUNNING THE CLARKE ON THEIR WR? Inquiring minds want to know....:ride:

SJMC_DON are you racing in the PNWMA series including the races here in BC ? I used to compete in this series years ago, maybe next year....

Yeah I don't care about reserve so a YZ one would work if I can't find an old WR one.

I too would like to hear about the Clarke tanks and any other's people have mounted on their 07 WR's.

I have not hit any of the PNWMA events yet, I want to hit the Monkeywrench for sure next year it is supposed to be a hoot. I am racing in the NMA series but I think some of our races (up north) are PNWMA points events...

I originaly talked to the guy at Clarke in the spring and the '06 YZ tank didn't fit the '07 WR and he didn't think they would have one ready till maybe September if at all. That;s all I know as after hearing about that kind of delay I too went the IMS route with the '02 WR petcock and have not looked back. The bike is still just as narrow in the transition area between the seat /tank. Dave.

So does the tank just widen in the shroud area?

The tank is much lower on both sides and higher in the filler cap area. Check out some of the pics of the bikes in the "Sexiest WR " thread and check out the differences between the stock and IMS 3.1 tanks. There really isn't a better option in the 3.1 size and if your looking for that size of tank you have found what your looking for. WR Dave. ?
