Racing a XR650l?

Recommended Posts

I applaud your enthusiam but I think you would get your ass handed to you. It's big, heavy, and slow compared to most of the other bikes you'd be running against I suspect. But...if you weren't worried about how you'd look and just want to have fun, go for it. Who cares what others think. Go your pace, get experience, have fun.

I raced a HS Last year on mine. I enter C-open class and actually passed a bunch of people. I ended up taking a wrong turn and went a few miles off course but go back on course to finish one 11 mile lap.

Just do it, people will think your crazy but it's fun. I went to a race this year as a spectator and saw a XR600 racing. Just let the fast people pass you and you'll have no problems.

I think I will give it a go in October at a North Carolina Hare Scramble. I'll let you guys know how the bike does!!

I use to ride with some guys out in Oregon on my xr650l and had no problem keeping up with them on CRF450's and CR250's. I made it up some hilll climbs that they could not make! I think the xr650l is awsome on the hills. I just had to work harder at riding it.

If your comfortable with the bike, then get out and race it if you have the urge to. Think of it as going out to ride on any weekend, except there are others to compete with on the trails if you wish, and if you break down, or go down and get hurt, there will be support there. And you will not be breaking any laws, trespassing or anything else to ride.. :applause:?

I raced mine in a socal harescramble and was in 15th at the end of the bomb run. It was a four lap race. I crashed the first lap. Crashed the second lap, My battery box came loose and wrapped up in my rear wheel the third lap, and I had to limp it in. I finished 77th overall of 149 entries, and had a blast. Just get out there. Who cares what people think. The first bike I ever raced was an XR200. My second race I won my class on it. If your comfortable on it do it. Make sure you do a good prep though. Also in the race Both front fork seals Gave up. Have fun.....:ride:

Also make sure you hit the horn when you pass people. A guy on a D/S did that to me a couple years ago and I remember thinking I had wasted so much money on my CRF450X that had just about every after market product you could put on it. Man was I pissed that some guy on a big slow D/S smoked me. 90% rider 10% bike
