Vulnerable Radiators??

I was out riding today, and found a guy who had a new electric start model. He actually let me ride it. Couldn't believe it. Man, I would never guess that that thing is only about 10 lbs. lighter than my XR600. It felt so light, and turned oh so good. Anyway, he had mentioned that he had dropped the bike on the left side when he first go it. When he did this, it crunched the radiator so bad that it started leaking. He had to send it away to be fixed.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?? Or was this just a freak thing. Not being the most expert rider, I am sure I will fall once or twice if I get this bike. If they decide to make radiator gaurds for it, how exactly would these work to prevent this from happening.
Please let me know. Thanks!!

I have the same sort of radiator setup on my 1999 WR400. I did the exact same crashing thing (I hate that), and had to send one side in to have it repaired.

Now I have some extremely beefy radiator guards made by Thumper Racing. It would take a very serious crash to biff the radiator now.

The guards were about 80 bucks and I'll bet Thumper Racing will make one for the DRZ if they don't already.

Here is their number:
(903) 938-0570

Here is a picture I took for someone of my headlight guard. In this picture, you can sort of see the Thumper Racing radiator guards in the background.

Anyone have any info. on some of these guards for the DRZ. I dropped mine too :) and it pushed the side in slightly...but the louvers on the front that catch the air took a hit from the pressure put on them due to the pushed in sides.

It is not leaking and everything works fine (no overheating)...any suggestions other than trying to pull the bracket mounts back out so that the louvers in front of the radiator is not quite as "pinched"?

Where do you send these radiators to...how much and how long....or would you not worry about them until they leak? Not that I plan on letting them get to that condition....how are the radiators on MX bikes...when they take a spill, does the same thing happen?

We were ridding Taskers Gap, here in Va., awful rocky...when the bike gets dropped there, it's really rough on it.

Thanks,

Here is a reply from another newsgroup that I saved about radiator repair:

Mylers (Located in Utah)
800-367-7699

"I sent them a radiator that was banged up pretty badly. They straightened it
back to spec, preassure tested it and returned it to me in only a couple of days
for $35.00. Great service."

I also met a guy who sent one to these guys and he was really happy, too.

Hope this helps!!!
