Tell me what you think of this bike.... the guy said i can have it for 2200 with all the extras or 2000 just for the bike...

Well looks like a good deal ?

However the part about the guy living in Washougal MX park might mean that it has alot of hours on it maybe?????

Just a thought

Seems like a pretty good deal to me assuming the bike was well maintained. I just sold my '01 a few months ago for $2000 w/o extras.

As far as what years are better. They were all very good and have proven rock solid in reliability, but the '01 and '02 had some improvements over the '00. There are very few differences between the '01 and '02. That being said, with the age of these bikes, hours and maintanence history will likely be the biggest factors in the future reliability of any 426. Definately try to find out how it was maintained and roughly how many hours are on it.

I purchased an 02 426 in May that had not been maintained very well due to it sitting in a barn for over a year but the engine didn't have a ton of hours on it. It runs like a champ for me and I'm very happy with it. I was able to buy it well below value because he just wanted to get rid of it.

I would look at the case and covers by the brake and shifter. If they are worn down or replaced, that might give you an idea of how much it's been ridden or to investgate further. Certainly not scientific by any means, but a good indicator most of the time.

Good luck, the bike looks nice. Take 2G cash and tell him the bike and gear or your walking. He won't not take all the green!!!!!! ?

2000: First year.

>Used a square key to anchor the balancer drive gear. If the gear retainer bolt loosens, the key can potentially damage the crank. It makes a very audible noise when this starts, however, and can pretty much always be fixed before it hurts anything.

>Had a grabby, chattering clutch. By now most have been fixed, but the use of 3 parts from the '01 clutch corrects this.

> Had stainless steel valves. Extremely long lasting, and inexpensive OEM replacements.

2001:

>Clutch upgraded

> Crank changed to use splines to anchor balancer gear

> Titanium valves, still exceptionally durable

> suspension refinements

2002: Slightly lighter, slightly more refined than 2001.

They're all as reliable as a driveway.

01's and 02's have titanium valves. Stretch more than Stainless Steel valves so you have to adjust them more often and cost about 5 times more to replace. I had an 02 that I put SS valves in when the Ti's got old.

00's old, but no titanium valves, less work and less money to replace. The 00's have the old style clutch though. Grabby. Most 00's get the 01 clutch when they get replaced.

As far as the auto-decomp. I can go either way. I like my old 00 w/ the lever. Allows me to open it up and let it breath if it gets flooded. Also good in bump starting.

I think it was in 02 when they went to the 'floating' front disc. My 02 had it, my 00's disc was solid.

There are some other minor diff internally. Like splined shafts rather than woodruff keys (although I can't remember where). Other than that all the 426's are pretty damn close to each other.

When you bump start a bike to you have to pull in the comp release
If you have a manual compression release system, here's the procedure.

>Put the bike in gear and pull it back against compression.

> Take it out of gear, pull in the release, and push.

> While holding the release, snap it into second gear, wait for the engine to start turning over. (keep pushing)

> Smoothly let out the comp release lever until the engine will turn over without it. If the engine will not fire at idle, GENTLY roll open the throttle only until it does fire.

> AS SOON AS IT FIRES pull the clutch in while holding the throttle steady until the engine is running stably.

With auto decompression, it works like this:

> push the bike

> snap it in gear

>pull the clutch in when it starts

Which one looks simpler?

How did you guys get this confused?

The '03-'05 YZ450's were the only 4 speeds, All the others were 5 speeds.

Thanks for the clarification.

I've only had my '00 426 for a few weeks. Bought it off eBay from a Harley dealer for $1000. They said it didn't run, and that they couldn't start it.

Found this site before bidding, read through some posts and learned that they had some peculiars when starting cold and hot.:prof:

Got it home, checked for spark (spark plug is a bear to get out), followed what I read here, and the bike fired up on the second kick.:applause:

Just haven't had a chance to really ride it yet, but am planning on going out this Saturday. Maybe I will get it out of second gear.
