I have just started using "Silkolene Silkopen", it works great for me.

I'm thinking of using spray silicone lubricant, the stuff is slippery and dry so doesn't attract dirt...

I have been using WD40 for years now, but change my cables once a year no matter what condition.
Silicone sounds good but not sure how it will react with the existing lubricant in the cable, you don't want gunk forming.

I use contact cleaner first to flush out any "gunk", then use the Silkolene.
