Second bike choice?

I have been looking for a decent bike for a second bike; mostly for all of my broke friends to ride so I have someone to go with. Any suggestions for something used that would be relatively inexpensive but could keep up under moderate riding levels?

I'd get new friends! ? You must be despirate or very generous to ride if you are willing to shell out the cash for a 2nd bike. If you're in San Diego I'll ride with you for free.
