Heck, just ask for the check.  I buy bikes like this all the time, but half of the people think I am crazy, too--but I suppose that is their loss.  I guess they don't recognize an honest person when they are approached by one.

You are not giving out any personal information that is not available publicly, and he's not doing that, "I'll pay you $5000 more than the cost of the bike for you to hold until I get there or to ship and you can refund the difference.  By the way, I need it shipped to Nigeria, where I am the Prince"

Besides, he has not comitted a crime until you try to cash the check and it is fraudulent.  Then it is a Federal Offense, and someone will take notice.

About 40-50 a year.

Sight unseen is a little strong, but digital pictures works just fine.

I find them, pay for them and ask the people to hold until I can pick them up when I am travelling in that direction, and sometimes I'll have them shipped.
