1987 Honda XR 600R Runs but needs work. Trade for guns.

or $650 cash call 880-1117

There's a picture of the bike on the Craigslist ad.

I've been looking for another XR600 for some time and $650 seems like a killer deal, especially since it "runs." I'm not looking for another money pit and don't have the time/energy for a second project bike.

This would be my spare/buddy bike and I already have a project bike (CR500 framed XR218) that's sucking up precious motomoney.

I'm leaving for Afghanistan in March and the wife wants to have a baby so it'll be a tough sell to the Household Finance Manager.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Man I wish you lived around me. I would do some trading with you. I always liked the big XRs.

who doesnt??

I don't. ?

I talked to the wife and we made a "trade." If I get the bike she gets to get something for the house. If I don't get the bike she gets to get something for the house.

I know the 1987-1988 XR600s are a little different (twin carbs, long header), but how much is really interchangable with the later (1991-up) bikes? I know the frame, suspension, head, carbs, exhaust, and other details are different. Is this worth, say, $600?

This will be my fourth bike. If I get it the bike will sit untouched until summer of 2009 save for a few runs to keep the seals wet. Is it worth it?

I called the guy and found this out:

1) He's had the bike for 2 years.

2) The kickstarter return spring is broken

3) There is a whirring noise that he said sounds like the cam chain is bad

4) The bike still has good compression and runs well

5) There is no smoke at start up or when running

I'm going to look at it tomorrow if it doesn't sell today.

If you are heading to afghanistan, I would turn that frown upside down and start appreciating guns! Be safe and good luck!

It's funny, I used to really enjoy guns and shooting before it became my job. I used to manage a 500-weapon arms room as a "hey you" job and it was tedious and stressful. After that I lost some interest in owning guns. Plus, the wife won't let me buy the types of guns I really want.

I would imagine that owning a motorcycle shop would take away some enjoyment of motorcycling once it became work rather than just for pleasure.

Also, guns are really expensive, and my hobbies have to compete for funding with the bike addition, house renovation, wife's needs, trips, and so on and so forth.

It really depends on what kind of work that it needs. If it is trans gears then I'd say no. If it is tires and a chain then I'd say yes.

One thing to consider is the parts policy of Honda. In the last few years they changed to a 10 year parts support. They used to be closer to 20. A lot of parts are available today, but how many will there be in 2009?
