Duoooogh OIL overfill

Recommended Posts

I was in a hurry and did a quick oil change on my pig(xr600). Well once I got up north I noticed I was losing some oil out my side covers and my breather hose. Make along story short when I did my oil change I only drained the crankcase and not the frame. DUMB. How much oil do you think was in there. It only showed about 1 inch above the high side on the stick. I was just curious. I drained it but was in camp and didnt measure how much i drained.:bonk::crazy::bonk: Any potential problems from that other than the oil in the airbox and the mess it made to the side covers and other seals it could push out of ?

A friend of mine works at jiffy lube whitch is an oil changing place if you dont know. They use guns to fill cars with oil and my friend set the gun to 4. he though 4 quarts, the gun was messured in gallons. The car just started poaring black smoke and running funny. He figured it out and drained the oil down to four quarts. The story doesnt really help you much but i thought it was related.

You should be OK. There is that extra hose from the reservoir to the head. Any extra just went down there and kept the crankcase over filled. That is why you saw the level that you did. Just empty the crankcase again and it will be close to the proper level. Run it some and check the oil level again.

Ya, no kidding. Just before we got together, Jiffy lube over torqued the oil drain bolt on my wifes Jag. Then I went to change the oil. The treads came out with the bolt. Would have been a $800 oil change, but I was able to thread it to pipe fittings. Never been back there since.

Hey guys, I noticed my oil was low in frame so filled up to stick, then went for all day ride. 4 minutes from house I went into over drive. but just over 80 sputtered a little then up my dirt drive 3/4 miles long sideways. Stopped to smoke and oil dripping out airbox. Is a 2007 uncocked and one of many 650's I have but never had this before, whats up?

In a dry sump engine, the oil will drain back into the crank case.

You overfilled it. The bike needs a to be at operating temp(after a short ride), and then turned off and the level checked.

With a filter change, the book states 2.06 qts.
