I see your new here so why don't you enlighten us on why the XRL frame is "junk to begin with"?

Yeah, funny. I'd like to know also...

Just look where the XRL frame came from. The 600R. How many races have 600R's won? Too many to count.

Is it because it's not made of aluminum? Or maybe because it was desinged around a HIGHLY successfull air head?

The XRL frame is based of the highly successful XR600 frame? You call it successful because it won races? The bikes that Johnny and Scott were riding were far from stock. Don't get me wrong, I loved every one of my XR600's. They are great bikes. They are durable and fun! They can do everything from super tight trails to wide open desert. I'm not trying to bash anyone for owning one, but I am stating that it would not be prudent to transplant a 650R engine into a dated chassis. They were designed in the 80's. I have had several XR600's over the years, and broke the frame multiple times on every one of them. When they are ridden hard, they fail. Usually at the footpeg mounts, the lower motor mounts and where the subframe hits the main frame. I would have to tear the bike down, and gusset the areas where they broke. I have a lot of experience fixing them. Since the introduction of the 650R, i have only had to fix footpeg bolts, not the frame. I currently have 2 650R's and my brother has one as well. All of the bikes have lots of hard miles on them with no issues. That is why I call the XRL a pos. They might be fun for a light trail ride or going to the grocery store, but they are not worth the effort involved in a motor transplant.

Well Motomanx thanks for a reasonable reply, although if you were breaking frames you must have been going beyond what the L was designed for.:excuseme:

Just be careful Dissing the "L" on here because remember they still make Them because they are "L"egendary not "R"etired:p J/K

Welcome to TT.

Maybe if motoman used a skid plate, setup his suspension and rode smart he could avoid casing the bike and breaking frames. I have NEVER heard of breaking XL, XR or XRL frames since riding/racing from 1979 to date. Many 1980s technology bikes are way better than the cheap H2O pumper crap I see on the showroom floor.:excuseme: :excuseme: :sweden::crazy:??

It's funny to hear from people that claim to have the best bike cause they own one.

Well I have owned a XRL,and now own a XRR,The L is just as good as a R,just different bikes. Each one has different features that appeal to us.

I sure miss the button.

Thanks for the welcome wagon guys. All of mine were XR600R's. They all had skidplates and suspension that was completely dialed in. Like I said previously, air cooled XR's (both the R and L variety) are good bikes. They are not up to being ridden hard. As well, they are just not worth the effort of the engine transplant. I am not trying to bag on the guys who have them and enjoy them. I am just giving my opinion on the subject. I would hope that I have a fair bit of knowledge due to the countless hours/miles that I have logged (on air-cooled XR's) in the past 15+ years. The original question was a guy looking for more performance out of an L. I will restate again, not worth the effort, buy an orange bike. I am lucky enough to have a Plated 650R that I enjoy, if I didn't, my garage would have a bit of orange in the midst of the sea of red. Happy Easter everyone!

I have been offered the orange Kool-aid and refused it so far. I realize that there is a fine line between hobby and mental illness. I also realize that I may have crossed that line by my "L" sensitivity. Happy Easter to you too! I hope you will still hang out on our forum.

ok...

has anybody ever swaped a XR650R motor to a XR650L frame?????

did a search but nothing.........

the deal is, i would get a R and just plate it, but here in wisconsin it cant be done anymore:mad: ..... and theres no way around it(i tryed)...... so....

the way it looks the L motor is limited to about 50HP at the wheel....

so what do you guys think......:sweden:

:excuseme::confused: Where did you get the info that the XR650L is limited to 50hp??Im sure that they will do better than that, wont they??Someone post a dyno sheet,or enlighten us some how,Thankx:bonk: :excuseme:

50hp sounds about right without giving up the reliablity of the air cooled power plant. The more power these engines make the hotter they run decreasing their life span. But yes you can get alot more from them just don't expect to have 40k miles of trouble free service. You can push the limits of the engine close to if not more than 700cc.

Some of you heavy modders chime in here if I'm wrong.

I'm keeping my "L" as long as I can.
