Fuel range with YZ tank

I rode a WR with a YZ seat/tank and liked it a lot better than my stock tank for sure. I have never ran my WR out of gas but I am wondering what kind of range should I expect with the smaller tank. Can you do a 2hr eastern hare scrambles or will you have to pit for fuel. That will make my decision. How have you guys made out with the YZ seat and IMS or Clarke tank? Do they look OK. SOme guy in the DRZ forum said his IMS tank kind of sucked. Thanks!!

Never having ridden an eastern hare scrambles I can't say for sure but I know that stock tank is only good for about hour and a half WESTERN hare scrambles, or about 50/60 miles. So I would guess you'll have to pit, but it will be close.

My last race time was just over two hours for about 65/70 miles and I estimate I burned almost 2.5 gal.s (I have 426 w/ IMS tank). The course did have several long, high-speed sand washes (I'm sure these use more gas) but was obviously not super fast overall (~34 mph).

My IMS tank fits perfectly. I picked IMS over Acerbis after seeing a YZ400 owner who endured some mounting difficulties w/ Acerbis (side panels and seat).

Hi Scott, the tank should last for about
100km or 50miles+.
Or you may want to install a milage meter
and plan out your pit stop for gas.

I like the Clarke tank on the WR. It carries the fuel lower than the IMS and has front mounts on both sides. It may rise a little steeper at the seat, but it is very narrow. It has an actual capacity of 3.5 gallons which seems like overkill. At 30 mpg (which is what it's been getting) the stock YZ tank range would be about 60 miles where this tank is about 105 miles! :)
-The bike will out last me at that rate.

Go to the members page and look up Jeff Shearin. He's a buddy of mine and has ridden a bunch of Hare Scrambles and GNCC's in the southeast. He has a YZF and I do know he pits on two hour races. But I'm not sure if that's a "just in case" or can the bike go the distance?


86TT225, 98CR80, 99WR, WR timing, throttle stop trimmed, air box lid removed, White Bros head pipe, silencer and air filter. Odometer and headlight removed. Moose hand and mud guards. YZ stock tank and IMS seat. Renthal Jimmy Button "highs" and Renthal Soft half waffle grips. AMA, SETRA.

I race GNCC, va. and NC. Harescrambles and I can get 4 laps(35-50 miles depends on lap lenght)on one tank.
I try to pit just after the finish line so I will know if there will be a 5th or 6th lap before I stop for gas.
It's not much info but I hope it helps.
Let me know where your race and ride mabey we can get together and roost.

Forgot to mention the reserve capacty of the yz tank, ZERO, NADA, ZILCH. If this is important I would use the wr valve if possible. This would limit the non-reserve ride time due to the height of the primary tube. IE: you would have to hit reserve sooner than if you had the wr tank.
