I am looking to get better gas milage out of this thing. I am getting about 6-7 mpg now. Would a chip make it burn less fuel or more?
I drive slow too and its not much better if any. :thumbsdn:

Essentially, you could possibly improve the mileage, but I wouldn't expect to break 10 mpg.

Remember, you're driving a medium duty truck with an RV body on it that is over 12 foot tall, and 102" wide.  This combined with the gearing under most medium duty trucks isn't very favorable to mileage.

Best thing you can do is slow down-wind resistance is your biggest enemy with something this big.

Well considering the fact most people don't drive their Class C's that much a year, it would probably take awhile to regain the initial hit of the diesel.

And that's why my parents chose to get the Ford V-10 in their 39 ft Class A.  To upgrade to the diesel pusher chassis and everything that goes with it was over $30,000 more for the same coach.  That's alot of fuel.

My parents average 7.2 mpg across the board, and that's flat towing a Saturn Vue.  But, they drive 62 mph max (they are in no hurry, they're retired) and when the wind gets bad, they park it.

Start asking RV folks what mileage they are getting with their rigs-you'll be surprised that it isn't that great-not like a pickup truck will.

DJTROY-how fast are you driving?

Speed Comes at a Price
65 MPH vs. 60 MPH = 6.4% Decrease in Fuel Economy
70 MPH vs. 60 MPH = 10.9% Decrease in Fuel Economy
75 MPH vs. 60 MPH = 17.3% Decrease in Fuel Economy

Well this statement is pretty self explanitory. Think about what you just wrote. :bonk:

Also do the math.
300 miles round trip on an average weekend. (Thats if I stay local) at 6.5 MPG = 46 gallons of fuel at $2.90 = $133 per weekend plus entry, gas, and food your into  $200 - $250 every week. Plus add the insurance and RV payment your close to $500 PER WEEK to own and drive this RV to the track.
So if I could save $50 per week at 10mpg I would be tickled.

i would agree how fast are you driving? we have a dmax with a 32 5th wheel and if we keep it around 60 65 we can get 10 mpg. also your a 34-35 ft trailer and then load it up your heavy back you foot out of the gas peddle. its not a race off the line.

No I have no clue!!!

In the larger trucks, the rule for economy has always been "Gear Fast, Run Slow".

Anything deeper than a 3.55 ratio, and it's too deep for the motor and powertrain you have, most likely.

I'm running 3.30's in my semi, and grossing 80,000 lbs, I can get 6.3 mpg if I keep it under 70.  If I run 75, I drop to around 5.8mpg.

Have you ever had the truck in for a checkup with a Duramax tech?  Explain to them your concerns, they may be able to help you.

We've got a Funmover 39c with the bigger cat engine. We get anywhere from 7.5 full, towing, some wind to 9.4 was my best. Yours is probably still breaking in.
