Yup, going to a 4-stroke. Now the big question, 250f or 450? There is one of each at the same place for the same price. I am not very big,6' 150lb would a 450 be to much? What i have now is a 125. I am leaning towards a 450 because of reliability. Whats your opinion?

I have a 426 and love it. Nice to have all the power when you want it.

i should also say that i ride at a very small private track, with some tight corners. Does that sound more like a job for a 250f?

in all honesty, the 450 has tons of power. being 150 lbs and comming off a 125, your probably more used to the small bike power. you dont need that much. and being on a small private track its prolly tight, and the 250f will be easier to corner, and fighting the big bike is not any funner than revvin the 250f to the moon.

250Fs definetely are no slouch in terms of lowend torque. Granted, they dont have the grunt of a 450, but they definetely have a lot more lowend than a 125.
Also, 250Fs are pretty bulletproof, so I wouldnt lean towards a 450 just for reliability.
If you are coming off of a 125, I think Id go with a 250F. Coming off of a relatively light, underpowered bike and considering how you are a pretty light rider, I dont think you will be disappointed with the power of a 250F.

You'll be able to go just as quick, maybe even quicker on a 250F than a 450F on a small track. They do wear out faster, but they are a lot of fun to ride.

i rode my rmz 250 way faster than my yzf 450, i wanted the 450 horse power for hill climbing.
250 on the track, 450 trail, bush

if could you try them both, see which one puts a bigger smile on your face

im leaning toward the 250f, because i am light, i ride on a tight track, and i am used to haveing to squeeze every last rev out of my 125. My dad wants to get me the 450, for reliability reasons. But i am worried that it would be to overpowered for me, i have never rode a 450, or even a 250 2-stroke.

The YZ450 will last longer, but the YZ250F is hardly what anyone could rightly call frail. They're the toughest of the 250F's by a considerable margin.

There a 3 reasons to get the 450.

1.It will put a smile on your face every time you pull the throttle.

2.Is it better to be aching for more juice and not being able to have it; or respect the throttle and in a few months go crazy as you like? Thats what I thought.

3. I've always found that parents are rarely wrong when it comes to making a decision like this one. You don't want the "buyers remorse".

the yzf 250's are way more reliable than
in my opinon than
the rmz 250
the crf 250
kxf 250
i owned a 05 rmz 250 for 2 seasons and i went back to yamaha, the quality just wasn't there, in the suzuki.
the yzf 5 valve motors have been proven for over 10 years by yamaha
i had a wr 250 same motor and put hrs and hrs on it.
by going from a 125 to a 450 it is a big jump for a 150 lb guy.
to handle a 450 a guy should be at least 170 to 200lbs unless you have lots of riding experience.
P.S. i was also faster on the 250.

just my 2 cents

I'm sure that the bike will make you smile when it puts your ass on the ground. The kids 150 pounds, not 245. The PROS have said many times that the 450s are too fast, inside and out.

I dont think that you really can go crazy on a 450 throttle, it will put you on your ass.

Also, sometimes, RARELY parents are idiots and dont know how a dirt bike pulls. Pops is just tellin the kid to get the fastest mother out there so he wont have to step up in 3 years. The 250f is a bike built around a learning curve. Some grown men never make the corner to the 450s.

Im 200lbs and I can put down faster laps on my 250f than my 450. You want to ring it out rather than fight the bike.

i'd say go with either one you want for what ever reason and don't think too much power is really too much power..you can always ride slower if you want to..but if you are going to eventually sell the bike..a 450 will have higher value when you sell..but you probably already know..thats all i have to offer

And figure out how fast it can possibly be ridden vs. how fast you ride it

you must have lots of riding experience. to handle the 400

Vinny came across to me he is nervous on riding a 450 and if he is, then he should go to a 250.

if weight is a problem, get a 250f...if you feel very comfortable on a 125, buy the 450.

i came up from a 125 but i felt that the 125 was way too slow for me...

the 450 is far more fun to ride but physically wears you out far faster than any 250f.

Your Dad also needs to think about your safety. When I got a 250 2-stroke so that I wouldn't have to waste money on upgrading later, I think I went up a level too quickly 'cause I hurt my knee(cartilage is still a bit screwed up) when it spat me off the back. I'd had a KLX250F trail bike(they're slow compared to the new mxers) and should have gotten a 125 smoker next. The 250F should last you at least 3 years with no major problems, and then if you want, you can go to a 450F. I can see your Dad's point, but seriously, the 250F is a great little bike(and a lot safer for now).

If your going to thrash the pants out of the 250f you may as well get the 450. I cant see why so many people say the 450's are so powerful and hard to ride. After riding a piped 250 2 smoker, my 06 450 feels smooth and far easier to ride, certainly no handful. I'm 80kg (170lbs maybe?) and no superstar rider and neither are any of my mates who have ridden it and they all say how nice and easy it is to ride fast. I find too especially on a trail ride, the extra power/torque can get you out of some messy situations.
Thats my 2 cents anyway.
