Faulty Regulator.

Can anyone tell me what causes reg's to fail? I had a problem with one but I replaced it and everything was fine for a few months. Now I have the same symptoms (excessive voltage at headlight, blowing globes under rev's). Spoke to a mechanic who wants to get my stator rewound and replace the reg at a cost of around $AUD500+.
Not sure if it's relevant but at the time of the last reg going bad, I had a YZ fender on the bike with no blinkers and a LED tail light. I spose i am leaning towards faulty wiring on the fender?

Any ideas would be appreciated.
