i have been diagnosed with torn acl and pcl in my right knee. i tore the acl back in '02 and just tore the pcl april of this year. my doc says it needs surgery? i have been doing rehab for 2 mos. now and have full ROM and only minor pain and instability, although i have been doing some light riding! my question is if i opt for surg. should i get both fixed at the same time, or just the acl so it will heal faster. i've already had 2 surgeons say they couldn't do it because the complexity of the pcl? so should i just leave it alone? i can walk fine and it only really hurts when i do something stupid like stub my toe stepping over something.
multiple knee tear ?

This is a no brainer.
The ACL needs to be reconstructed. I would let the PCL heal by itself, whichis something it has a unique ability to do.
Come and spend five days with me and I will give you back your old life.

YOu don't have to convince the insurer. We are on almost all the national plans and many of the regional ones,

Yes he does... I lost 20# since seeing the doc. Between prescribed PT and pain/suffering, you'll lose the weight faster than Jenny Craig.
It's money well spent to go see Dr. Mark.

well i rode with the torn acl for 5yrs. without a problem, so if the pcl will heal itself i may just leave it alone?

Thats a good question. Knees with an ACL and no PCL do excellently. Occasionally knees with a PCL, but no ACL do good too. No knees with niether ACL or PCL do well. Its seems that you need at least on cruciate functioning.
Still, fix the ACL, and your knee won't trouble you anymore.

The PCL can heal on its own, but this knee will be unstable because of the lack of the ACL in combination with some mild residual laxity which occurs after a PCL tear. (although the PCL on its own, isn't the main problem)

Being an expert in the field of ACL replacement, both knees within 10 years, I highly recommend acl replacement. My first replacement was a procedure that removed part of my patella tendon to replace the acl. This had a longer rehad period and I still experience a great deal of discomfort from the surgery and lack of connective tissue besides the fact they removed a portion of my meniscus. The second replacement utilized a patella tendon graft from a cadaver and no removal of damaged meniscus. The rehab for the first surgery was about 4 to 5 months and I was running road races. The rehab for the second surgery was about 2 months and was running once again. I knew what to do and not do the second time and probably would have been released quicker had I not snuck out to ride and twisted my knee in the mud.
An exercise bike is the answer to gaining back your mobility, strengthening your quads, and keeping the weight off besides being non-impact.
First and foremost is patience and diligence in the rehab program. No more riding without knee braces and I stand a lot more while riding to keep my feet off the ground.

I'm 44 yo and have been ACL deficient for 15years. I tore it skiing and playing Volleyball.
This past fall, I tore the meniscus (same knee) playing ice hockey mostly due to the fact that I didn't have an ACL.
If my lifestyle channges much more, I'll likely have the ACL repaired , hamstring graft only ! This is not near as evasive as the patella procedure.
I would also get one of these to prevent swelling.
