My friend has an '06 YZ450F and the tranny locked up. He said that it was popping in and out of gear then it just locked up. The motor runs and the clutch seems fine. Any ideas? Thanks

Is it still locked up now or is it free? If it is freed up and you can still ride it change the oil and put a good brand in it like AMSOIL and see how it does. Just make sure he is chainging the oil regularly about every hour to an hour and a half of rideing with a good oil, thats what I do and I used yamalube for about a season then switced to amsoil.

NEVER ride a bike that is jumping out of gear or has locked up until you find out what is wrong and you fix it. It is very dangerous! If you are heading for a jump and it pops out of gear you will be very badly hurt. It could be a bad bearing in the tranny. I had a small needle bearing go in the tranny on a 125 a few years back. I was riding it and it started popping out of gear do I stopped immeadiately. Took it home and dumped the tranny oil and it had a bunch of metal in it. I put new oil in it and rode it in my driveway for a minute where it wouldn't hurt me if it locked up, and I dropped second gear in a couple minutes. Split the cases and found that a small needle bearing had somehow gone bad on the end of the secondary shaft and it ground out the cage and started grinding into the case itself. The secondsary shaft then moved away from the primary shaft and the gears rode out on the teeth and took out the gears in my tranny. It wasn't a fun time. I'm afraid you will probably have to split the cases and see what's going on in the transmission.

It happened today at the track and we couldn't get it out of gear and still can't. I imagine that he lost a gear or that the shifting mechanism broke or is bent. No broken cases, no loss of oil. He changes the oil pretty regularly. I guess we will find out when he takes it apart.

KJ is right. That's exceptionally bad advice, for the exact reasons he gave.
