Bum Thumb

I hyperextended my right thumb while riding about two and a half months ago and while I have regained most of my grip strength, it's still a long way from being normal. I didn't go see a doctor because it didn't hurt that bad and everyone said what I did is a pain in the rear and the thumb takes a long time to get better. I still don't have good mobility in the thumb (very stiff attempting to bend the thumb toward the palm). Also the second joint (closest to web between thumb and index finger) becomes very sore and achy after I've been riding for more than a couple of hours. Same thumb joint also now feels like it's hanging up and if I wiggle it around it will crack (like cracking your knuckles) and feel better.

I'm starting to rethink going to get it looked at, although I'm not sure what they can do. Or is what I'm describing typical and much more time is needed?

Most likely diagnosis is a tear of the ulna collateral ligament. Without treatment it leads to chronic instability of the thumb and arthritis.

Find a doctor.
