DR Mark, another broken collarbone question for you...

My 17 year old son broke his collarbone racing last thursday, the urgent care gave him a figure 8 brace and told me to follow up with his regular doctor after a week or so.

I can feel a little bump where the break occured, and he is still pretty sore. After reading some of the information on this forum about these breaks, I am wondering if I should be looking into surgery for him? or do you think this will heal ok by itself..

I have provided a picture of his xray and a link to another shot.

thanks for your help!

That is signifigantly displaced enough that in a young active person, it will do better if it heals the way his Maker designed it to be. That means an outpatient surgery to repair it with a plate and screws.

Is there an optimum time period in which to have this done? is this something I could find a good Dr. here in Portland Or. (or close) to do? if not, recommendations? what are the chances of him having problems if surgery isn't performed?

thanks for your time and expertise!

This problem is best addressed, sooner than later. If it isn't fixed, he has a signifigant likelyhood of being somewhat weaker on that side. Its not the end of the world for most people. For athletes its often a problem.

I don't know anyone in your area, and I don't reccommend that you try to convince some average guy do his first one of these on you kid.

If you come visit me this Monday, he can go back to Portland in about 36 hours 1000% better than he came.
