One LAST Knee Brace Question

After searching and reading through MANY posts on this topic, I have one simple question.

Is there any product or set up that offers the front and SIDE impact protection similar to the asterik brace, without the risk of upping the odds of a femur break ???

I have fell a few times with the asteiks, and the impact protection has been GREAT. I have used Fox Raptors in the past, but the asteriks are way more protective against side impacts. (Falling over and bike landing on leg)

I have no other leg/knee issues that require the full-on brace.

Thanks .....

THOR, Answer and 661 all make very protective knee armor that cover more area than the typical shin guard.

i kinda have my eye out for the same thing. seems like most kneepads do great against frontal impacts, but no so well on the sides. every time i go into a shop i check out all the pads they have. so far, nothing i like that much.

evs makes a cheap knee pad ($20) that has a little better side coverage than most others i've seen. msr has some that look ok, but haven't seen them in person yet.

661 Richochet is a good one, as is the new MSR version (Raptor?, which I have had on back-order for about 2 months now).

I wear the 661 but want to try the MSR version which is a similar design.

Both are wrap-around styles with locking pins in the hinge to prevent hyperextension, but since there's no metal brace involved, should not cause a tib/fib break. Lots of padding too.

Believe me,
If I had a choice between knee surgery and a broken femur, I would gladly take the broken femur. Less cost and less residual pain.
But that's me...
rock on.

Huh? :excuseme: You'd take a broken femur over knee surgery? While my ACL surgery hurt, I was up at walking the next day and I'll be riding by the 3 month point. I highly doubt any femur break would result in such quick turn around.

I all I have to say about the whole thing is while a broken bone will keep you out for a while, wehn it heals it will be stronger than before whereas with most knee injuries requiring surgery, you have some cartilage damage that can really deteriorate over time. Possibly leading to arthritic knees. That was my point. I would do just about anything to avoid any kind of joint injury.
Oh yeah, I think a femur will only keep you out of the game for 2 months, tops.
rock on.

In my career, I have lost three patients from fat embolism/adult respiratory distress syndrome after femur fractures. Several people have come into the hospital DOA on my watch resultant from femur fractures in which the sharp end of the bone lacerated the femoral artery and they bleed out.

None of my ACL/PCL patients have ever died.

And I have treated ten times as many ACL cases

i am young and strong. it's been almost 8 weeks for me and it's another 2-3 before i can consider walking. i think it'll be a while after that before i can realistically return to full activity.

Would you recommend wearing knee braces or guards for a racer with no previous knee injuries?

I wear the Asterisk knee braces to prevent injury but I wonder if high quality guards would be better.

this question has been asked (and answered) in this forum numerous times. drmark has stated that there appears to be no evidence that knee braces prevent knee injuries.

they do apparently have a comfort effect for people with damaged or unstable knees.

I need to qualify this a bit.

Knee guards (like a clam shell over the knee cap) DO prevent penetrating injuries to the knee.

Knee braces, like the kind that sponsers Supercross, have never been shown to prevent injuries to the knee ligaments that I have made a career of reconstructing, ACL, PCL, etc.

I use to wear knee guards.2 months ago I bought a used pair of asterisks knee braces. They are beat up and give at the joints (they are loose and worn).I feel this is safer, because it gives enough while supporting and protecting. My knees use to hurt and have been good since I bought the braces.I do feel they are a overbuilt. If someone were to build a "flimsy" asterisk knee brace-I feel that would be the most beneficial to the general rider/racer. A shear pin should be used on the hinges to stop the brace from breaking the femur IMO

yeah, my bad for not being specific and mentioning ligament/twisting injuries. a search can dredge up all the info again.

seems like some of the knee 'braces' have better side impact protection than most plain ol' kneeguards too. but not $500 worth. at least not to me. lol.

Just my 2 cents. i have the Atsrisk knee braces. Although they give me more confidence because I assume Im protected, my knee feels like garbage when I take the brace off and I get pain in my knees all week after riding. I may be going back to a traditonal knee pad soon. BTW, I never had knee problems before.

I agree with the Dr on this subject ....
I am just looking for a knee protector that offers good side impact protection.

I am going to try the new MSR reflex. If it feels/looks good, I am selling my Asteriks.

I also saw one by alpinestars, that looked pretty good also.
