Blown 3rd Gear, have the newer bikes addressed this problem?

Recommended Posts

I own an 03' model WR450 and i just stuffed 3rd gear, just wondering if yamaha have fixed this problem with the weak 3rd/5th gear?

Looking at the parts fiche, the 03 model gears are a different part number to the 06 and 07 model gears, can anyone shed more light on this - are the newer gears any different and can they be installed in the earlier gearboxes?

Thanks for everyones help.

This has got me a little freaked out. I just bought an '03. Did I just buy a bike that is going to spit a 3rd and/or 5th gear!? Also, the service manual says to basically dissassemble the top end and inspect everything every 1000km. Do you guys do that? I don't mind basic maintenance like valve adjustments and such but that's a little much. I love this bike but if it's going to be this labor intensive and a transmission time bomb, it may be time to get something else. Advice please.

Yamaha has fixed this problem. Usually 5th to go first.

Don't know if gears from later model will fit though? Should do, but speculating....

Thanks for the reply, i will be ordering parts on monday so i need to make a decision before then, ill do a bit more research but any help would be great.

Also has anyone tried ordering from JP-Parts? are they the cheapest around and are they really minimum OEM quality?

Cheers everyone.

hey guess what was found when the cases were split...

ALL the gears are cooked!!! almost all of them need to be replaced - he said it was probably from crappy oil - it was motul 3100 - the dealer recommended it - i thought motul oil was good???

anyone experienced cooked gears before?

It doesn't sound like the type of oil is the cause, it sounds more like the frequency of oil changes are more to blame. How often do you change your oil? Remember these bikes don't hold much, I change mine ALOT, but I have seen other guys that don't change oil but 2 or 3 times a year. I have an hourmeter, and try to change the oil out at 5 hours, but will let it go 10 if I am out riding for a weekend. I am especially cautious if I am riding alot of higher speed stuff.

i change it every 500 kays, the bloke was saying that the gears might have been second hand ones that were put in there at some stage because no heat transfered to the gear axle and the cooked ones in the middle were completely stuffed but the ones on the end are like brand new.
